Q: What is Reshade?

Reshade allows old games to look newer, and more modern.
lHUj5AL.jpg

Track: Default Daytona
Mod: WinstonCup 98

How do I Install this wondrous graphical device?

1.) Place the d3d8.dll file from https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases into your main NR2003 directory

2.) Download ReShade, https://reshade.me/
Run it, there should be a window asking which game to select. Select your NR2003.exe, and choose Directx9
Please, download all the selected effects options.

3.) Run the game, go to graphics turn off all shadows that reflect on the car.

4.) Hit Shift+f2, look to the bottom of the window, there should be a "continue" button. Select that.

5.) Enable your desired effects

6.) Enjoy your game.

PS. Do not get the DX11 version, if you are running a 16:9 ratio it will squish your display to a 4:3. You will also take a bigger FPS hit.

Below are some pictures with RESHADE on, and some cinematic effects.

Finally got Reshade working with NR2003

Question, do you have to use the stock game exe first, or can you use one of the no cd's exe. I keep getting a missing msvcp.dll error message

I'm literally following the instructions step by step, but after I run the installation and download all the plugins and go to launch the game, I get a "NR2003.exe has stopped working" every single time. I don't know what else to do.

@garrett1127 I got the missing msvcp140.dll error too, even after I registered the .dll myself. I got the message to go away after dragging and dropping the .dll in the main NR2003 folder, but then reshade still wouldn't start with the game.

I would start the game, the load screen would come up for a couple seconds, then I'm back to looking at my desktop... I gave up after an hour. :p I think there's some setting that most of us have checked that isn't playing nice with reshade. Later, I'm going to try turning WIndows compatibility mode off to see what happens.

I have the NoCD. In regards to your DLL error I need more information. There should be msvcpXX/msvcpXXX.dll (X) is the number.

If its the number I think it is (100). You need to follow this Answer.

If its (140) Use this.

In regards to your ""NR2003.exe has stopped working",
Windows 10 has started to become very iffy with NR2003.
I have Windows XP Service Pack 3 selected on my RESHADE install.
Try launching it from the "Troubleshoot Compatibility" after left clicking.
Then Try Recommended settings.

It should work.

If RESHADE has been installed correctly, upon launching NR2003
You should see this. (it should also appear with loading XX amount of plugins)
eMlBBjs.jpg

(If you do not see this text during bootup, then you haven't properly installed RESHADE.

In your NR2003 Folder you should also have a
"reshade-shaders" Folder
---- "Shaders" Folder
----"Textures" Folder
----README.md
----REFRENCE.md
dgVoodoo.conf
.dxgi.dll/ini/txt

Again, dropping the D3D8.dll into your NR2003 first is extremely important.

Well, this only changes color. I would like to see NR2003 shaders and better graphics. But, iRacing has the same NR2003 graphics, but it looks better. Maybe Reshade can help! :)

Question about Reshade, how does it affect framerate? My old rig runs at the 35 to 60 fps typically but has been known to slow down significantly at the more graphic intensive tracks. So if reshade gives it an additional hit, I might not want to give it a try

Hate to bump this post up after it's already quite old, but figured I'd reply here instead of attempting to make a new one.
So I did just install Reshade and all the good stuff, followed all the good instructions, but NR2003 still crashes on startup. I have NR2003,exe and NR2018 v1.0.exe in my folder (still trying to figure out the differences between the two...but I'd rather use the old NR2003 exe since the 2018 doesn't like PTA physics or something)
Anyway, I did specifically tell Reshade to patch the NR2003.exe and when I (beforehand) came to putting the d3d8.dll in the folder, there was one already there! It was smaller (100 KB compared to 112 KB), but it was there. Anyway, now starting NR2003.exe doesn't work, I get as far as the intro video, and then it just throws me back to the desktop, even without error message. I did already set it to WinXP_SP3 compatibility. Somehow, though, NR2018.exe boots up fine AND loads the Reshade stuff. So I set it up there, gotta figure it all out still, but remember, NR2018.exe isn't set to any compatibility mode or anything.

So yeah, I don't really feel like using NR2018.exe but loading NR2003.exe crashes when loading it up with Reshade.

Replying to this is preventing me from wording my response correctly as it says I am using spam like elements.

Move the D3D8 file to your desktop and run the original NR2003 program to see if it does not crash. That may fix it.

Yup, not having the D3D8.dll in the folder prevents any crashes, due to the D3D8 from Reshade apparently "only" really redirects to Reshade's D3D9.dll - which really baffles me because the old D3D8 I had (from somewhere?) didn't crash, but also doesn't obviously redirect to D3D9.

EDIT: Apparently turning OFF compatibility mode fixes it crashing on start-up....now I just gotta figure out why on earth it's now running on the wrong GPU for me..

Okay I got it all sorted for my case, but I'll write it down here, in case anyone else has the same problem. @readytowrestle I know your post is two years ago, but my issue was basically literally the same as yours that you posted, hopefully the "solutions" are comparable(?)

Anyway, to clear up some stuff, I'm running on a HP Pavilion 15 Notebook, with an Intel i5-4200 CPU (with integrated GPU, which handles NR2003 really darn well) and a nVidia GeForce GT740M (which struggles to get 25 FPS out of NR2003 huh)

Anyway, before having applied Reshade, my settings were:
NVidia Control Panel: "nr2003.exe shall use nVidia GPU"
config.exe: recognized and selected nVidia GPU as renderer
NR2003.exe: ran using GPU 0 (Intel iGPU according to Task Manager)
So that was already weird BUT it worked and I was fine with it.

Now, with Reshade:
- NR2003 crashed
- I turned off compatibility mode
- NR2003 boots up, but uses GPU 1 (nVidia GPU)
- I open up Config again without D3D8 and D3D9 (because I read that config might behave strangely with those in there; also this is the D3D8 I had in there earlier, it was supposed to redirect NR2003 to my GPU1 but still didn't, lmao)
- Config only recognized Intel HD Graphics Family
- re-insert dll's
- NR2k3 still uses GPU1
- Last step I took: Went into Nvidia Control Panel, told nVidia Control Panel to redirect NR2003.exe to Intel GPU

Now the NR2003.exe boots up just fine, uses GPU0 (at 75+ FPS) AND Reshade also lives all happily!
Technology is weird...
Anyway, I hope this helps at least someone; and if not, I hope it gives someone a good laugh.

PS: Not to mention I used an outdated version of D3d8 and Reshade earlier due to me having downloaded it from a youtube video mediafire link, thus having had quite an "ohh..." moment when i downloaded and used all the up-to-date files from the original post.

Unfortunately, none of this works for me. The game continues to crash, no matter what I do. It'd be great if you could assist me, if not that's fine, I'm just really perplexed.

I wanted to share this here incase it helps anyone, or I find myself in this place in the future and cannot remember how I fixed it!

I had a similar issue to others that i've seen which when trying to use the updated d3d8.dll the sim would no longer launch. The config.exe would not open either saying it 'cannot find selected renderer'. This dll had worked previously for me, however after reinstalling windows this problem started, so I knew it must have been some missing drivers or something somewhere.

In the end this resolved itself when I installed iRacing on this PC because iRacing also installed a bunch of vcredist libraries that were not previously on my PC. Its obviously not required to install iRacing, however you may want to try installing the older vcredist libraries to see if that fixes it directly.

Happy simming,
