Figured I'd start a thread here, since not all folks are Twitter/Instagram/FB users. I am working on a new 1992 carset for the Cup90 mod that will utilize the newer high resolution templates I'd released. Plus, there's a very helpful group in this forum of folks who are great at identifying the harder to see logos in some of those old grainy photos and videos.

Anyways, to start off with, here are 4 completed cars. Note that they were initially finished on an upscaled version of the original templates. I have since moved them over to the new templates, so the photos are a bit outdated, and I didn't feel like redoing them.

With that said, here we go!

For these 4 cars, all logos are either publicly sourced from Brands of the World, or I redrew them.

Finished Ricky Rudd's car last night. A bit of a pain in the butt. Mostly just due to having to redraw a majority of the car. But, I enjoyed bringing it together. I was a big fan of Ricky's at the time.

Where are you sourcing all of these tiny, obscure logos? Are you finding them and tracing them yourself? I’m curious as to the process of how you throw in so much detail.

Great work!

Yeah, basically what you said there. I'll scour through as many photos as I can locate throughout the year. Then, anything remaining that I may still not be certain about I'll usually switch to video from the year and search for any decal sheets from the year. This will often times reveal everything. But, in some cases none of the above ends up really identifying certain logos. At that point I'll usually contact modeling groups, photographers from the era, etc.

Once I have what I need I typically draw everything in Illustrator, Photoshop, or a combination of both. The more common stuff I can often just pull from 'Brands of the World' and turn them into conting decals, which is nice. But, a lot of the cars will have a couple obscure things so I'm constantly having to draw up new logos. That Ricky Rudd car I had to draw fresh logos for just so I could get everything sized right. I drew a new hood Tide logo from scratch, the numbers, The Tide's on the quarters, a couple quarter contigs, and the Tide/slogan on the tail.

It's fun to bring them to life, but I will say I don't really enjoy the research when it hits roadblocks. But, I'd say 97% of the time I'm able to acquire everything needed for accuracy on at least one car from the season. Sometimes I'll think I'll have to skip a logo and then a few cars later there's another car with the same one and it's entirely visible, solving the issue on the previous car. That always rules. lol

@Lation Along with what @Dr. Noise does, other ways to find that hard logos is that some of us buy old race programs and magazines from back in the day. I've found some great brand ads/logos and close up photos etc.

Then search, remake where needed.
That's....actually something I never even though of doing. Hell. hahaha. That's good thinking, too!

I feel your pain from working on 1989 cars, especially the Tide logos. The ones on the car just don't match up with the standard logo. @Lastlap has helped me out with a few logos that were a little off or hard to find.

Slow progress. Summers are always a busy time. Now that I've spent a good amount of time in this mod, boy does it have some time consuming areas. "Oh, you want a straight line from the front of the nose to the side of the nose and think you can just draw straight lines? WRONG! YOU WILL ZIG ZAG THEM!"

Okay, mod, okay. Stop yelling at me. And don't even get me started on the passenger side door/fender section that just....wobbles all your diagonal lines. lol

@Dr. Noise If you look at a flat or carview for too long you'll go crazy.

Except what the model is, view from a distance... also think in car & track cams.

I use to try to be pixel perfect... I've learnt to adjust, lol.

Great Job!

You are not wrong there. lol. There are some parts I will definitely just let go cause... I mean... they just aren't worth it (hell my real race cars weren't even straight all the time lol). But there's a few spots I'll take the time to straighten out. I am at the very least subjective about what I "waste" my time perfecting. haha :)

Tell me about it. The multi-color fade on the Alan Kulwiki's zerex car ended up being the easy part. Somehow that straight line had to match up with the front bumper and above the rear bumper, which doesn't even make a lot of sense on the real car.

Also, the hi rez templates you released have been really helpful for my 1989 set, thank you!

A couple of times I've bought decal sheets (intended for use on plastic kit cars) but they seems a bit low res when I scan them so it's probably not the best way to go about it (or I need a better scanner :p). One time I bought a 1:24 Biffle truck die-cast only so I could take a pic of the Grainger box on the bed and that turned out a bit better :)

I have done all of these things, too. Or with diecasts I'll just find someone in a diecast group that owns something I need already and ask them to take a photo (and then hope they don't suck at taking photos).

My Fiber TDS connection that generally gives me a 550 download / 400 upload is currently giving me .01mbps for upload. So slow it can't even post a photo. Anyway, the Mark Martin car's done. hah.

That seems better than buying all the diecasts lol. I'm pretty neutral on Biffle and the truck is in gold for whatever reason (pretty sure it was red irl) and then apparently one of the cats decided to kill the box it came in so it's pretty much worthless now lol
