Many times when a track is penned, there are plans that never see fruition, from planned oval circuts, to longer road course layouts that never saw the light of day.

First off is the well know Lime Rock Park, which actually was meant to be longer, but the west half was never constructed AFAIK.

Fuji Speedway was originally meant to be an oval track, but funding ran out part way though, and eventually only one banked turn was built, now no longer used, and the circut was converted to a road course.

what tracks do you know of that never saw completion in their intended form?

The proposed Riverside Oval (1969) Think Pocono...
It was so far into to development that I was given this brochure at the 1969 Motor Trend 500, as was every person in attendance. What happened? Ontario Motor Speedway happened...I believe the addition of this oval would have saved Riverside from the doomed future...

Looking at this brochure and Riverside's proposal above, I ended up remembering Texas World (which I like as much as you like Riverside). Do you know any place where I can find out who was running on the Road Course at Texas World? I am making my own trackpack, which only includes tracks until 1980.

I don't have a drawing, but I always thought it would be cool to see another Pocono type track. 3 turns as Pocono, but make it about 1.75 miles, not 2.5 and also make turn 3 with a little more banking and a Talladega type turn/banking going into Turn 1.

I don't know, it just seems like it would be a cool track.

Not 100% this counts as it was partially constructed at one point, but.......

phoenix-old.jpg

Phoenix Raceway was originally planned to be a Road Course first, with the oval as an after thought, hence the openings in the wall prior to the 2004 restructuring. Not sure on the specifics, but at some point either the road course idea was scrapped late into construction with the infield Roval added instead, or the Road Course was used very briefly with the infield Roval constructed shortly thereafter to replace it.

The outer area of the course is actually still there as a street, aptly named "Road Course Road" https://www.google.com/maps/@33.373523,-112.3146864,818m/data=!3m1!1e3

That would be a really cool track build. I wonder if the idea was planned for F1 as they did go there in the late 80s/early 90s after the track was built, but ended up doing a street coarse instead.

I'm pretty sure that image is of Monza

Edit: That is definitely Monza, looks like just a proposed configuration for a race. Not sure what Indycar they are specifically referring to.

Have you ever tried Peoria or Peoria2k7. It's been awhile since I raced it but I think it's around a 1 mile based on Pocono. I remember it being a really fun track back in the day, guess I'll have to revisit it now.

This Road Course ROVAL concept was only partially built as a part of Big Bill France SR's grand plan of having a 24 hour race run on Talladega as well as having the track be used as a testing ground for speed on the Oval for OEM's it was never built to completion and thus the 24 hour race was never run at Talladega but it was in the works back in 1968-1969
