OK, I'm learning here, or trying to anyways. I downloaded the 3-car scene and did a couple renders just fine. So I started looking around through the components of the scene and I saw that it had chrome rims. My question is, what is the correct way to apply them to the render? While we're at it, same question about the different car makes. What's the correct way to switch from one marque to another? I've managed to do both things somehow, but I am 100% sure the way I did it was NOT the proper way!

THANKS!!

For me the switching of makes is simple. I right click on the make body, then select hide object. Next right click in the scene and select un-hide by name. Now from the list I choose the make I want to render. If the scene has extra chrome wheels, do the same as the makes, just right click on a wheel and select hide object. When you un-hide select the other wheels.

Another thing to check, who's render scene is it, Iceman has done a lot of scenes with chrome wheels, but I believe most if not all are done using Brazil, at least the ones I have are that way, if it is Brazil, unless you have Max capable of using the Brazil plug-in, you won't be able to change them.
I'm not sure if other people's render scenes have chrome wheels mapped into their scene, since I mainly use Iceman's.....because he is my bud, and he's helped me on instructions to changing them.

The scene I am referring to is the Bullring BR13 Gen6 3 Car Mental Ray Scene. I somehow opened up the Material Explorer and saw a list of all this stuff, including the chrome, maybe three different kinds, if my memory serves me at the moment (I am currently at work, away from my laptop). I just dragged the material item to the center rim, and to the outer rim, and it worked. Maybe what I did wasn't supposed to be done that way, but I pretty much have no clue about such things at this point. LOL

Great to see you here, Scott!

I appreciate the guidance from you all! In reality, I need all the help I can get! I'm going to play around with it and see what happens....

OK, I tried the suggestions mentioned, and they definitely helped. I appreciate the help, for sure! I'm just going to have to familiarize myself with it all. The switching back and forth thing with the different makes is much better now! I attempted to import Scott's chrome image, but I couldn't get that figured out. I have a car painted that needs chrome rims in the render thereof, so I am pretty interested in that. I went back and tried to replicate what I did the first time, and I made sure I wrote it all down! Here's what I did:

  • Opened the 3 Car Scene from here
  • Opened the Material Explorer
  • Saw three items named Chrome AERO, which I thought must be rims. Maybe it is just a texture, or whatever you call it.
  • Used mouse to drag one of these over to each center rim (6 places), and each outer rim (6 places). I actually tried all three, and discovered they all yielded the same result.
  • Rendered scene
  • Saved image

I don't know if it was right, wrong, or what, but I would up with the following:

Now if I could figure out how to get that deal out of one scene into another! I saved it as a material library, I think it was. Then I opened the two-car scene and tried to apply it in there. It didn't turn out the same. Not shiny and chrome-y at all! So, I am still working on figuring it out.
