One of my favorite NR2003 tracks ever is Eight Bowl. I love superspeedway racing but it *can* get a little monotonous, and the figure-8 style of that track gives just the right amount of variety, not to mention the track position strategy that comes with the inside line suddenly becoming the outside in the very next turn and then back again.

I do however also love short tracks, specifically high-banked ones like Bristol. The tight confines and the beating and banging to gain position can be a lot of fun. But recently after driving both Eight Bowl and Bristol back to back, I started thinking of how amazing a hybrid of the two would be. An overlapping figure-8 like Eight Bowl but with the size and banking of Bristol. I have literally had dreams about racing on a track like this as a result and would so love to see it realized.

It's entirely possible something like this exists but I have yet to see it, and the only small figure 8s I have seen are the traditional demolition derby style where cars meet in the middle as opposed to one like Eight Bowl where there's an "overpass" where the track meets in the middle. If it does exist in some form and anyone knows about it, do let me know.

If it doesn't exist...I'd be tempted to put up some really money to commission such a track if necessary, although that may have to be in the future when I'd have the funds. But if this idea intrigues anyone else, specifically anyone with the skills and know-how to create tracks (I can do a lot of things for NR2003, but track making is not yet one of them) then they would be my absolute hero in taking on a project like this. I'm a big proponent of creating and spending time on what you personally enjoy, so perhaps someone else in the community agrees with me about how absolutely awesome a track like this would be.

TL;DR, a track like Eight Bowl in the size and banking of Bristol would be awesome and this post simply serves to throw the idea out there to anyone who may want to take that on as their next project.

Cheers!

Sounds awesome! Id chip in a few $ to see it come together.

So this would be a 2-3 lane max track that would be 3-4 miles long at around 33-36 degrees banking? I'm assuming we are not talking super sharp corners since the track length would be somewhat long.

Not sure if it would be 3-4 since Bristol is only a 1/2 mile. You'd likely want to elongate the straightaways just a bit but those turns would likely be pretty tight. I'll whip up a quick sketch to illustrate what I'm thinking. But it'd literally be to Bristol what Eight Bowl is to, say, "Dega or Daytona.

I almost feel like what you are describing is eight bowl shrunk down with turns like hillside. The track would be sort of a oval shaped bowl (coliseum style with stands like Bristol). The lower straight would be sunk way down and in the turns you would have to sort of climb or descend between the straights.

That actually sounds like a really difficult but really cool track.

Yeah, the decreased size would definitely make it a challenge since they'd be much tighter and closer together than Eight Bowl. And yeah, there'd need to be some sort of elevation decrease or increase to account for the over/underpass. That could be incorporated into one of the banked turns, though.

No.
Real world tracks with crossovers are incredibly rare.
There are only 2 in the world which are FIA Grade 1 listed; Suzuka and Fiorano.

In fact the only flyover figure 8 that I can think of that actually approached anything like you suggesting was the North Circuit at Oran Park Raceway; which is now gone and a housing development sits on the former site.

That's why I love Eight Bowl: it's definitely out of the ordinary but is actually still somewhat realistic.

Torn8oally(or something like that) it jumped the cross over.
Haha yeah I've seen some with jumps, but I'd like to keep things a little more grounded in reality....pun intended.

So basically a figure-8 version of Bristol, but with an overpass like Eight Bowl, assuming I've interpreted your idea correctly?

That wouldn't be too hard to accomplish..... The bigger pain would be setting up where Pit Road would be.

Exactly. I figure pit road could exit to the right just like Eight Bowl and circle around the first turn. Might need to limit the cars to less than 40 but that would depend on the total size of the track. Could be slightly bigger than Bristol if need be.

I made something a little bit like that a while back (the shorter track was inside the bigger one), not pretty but I just wanted to try the concept.
Fortine even helped me with lp-files but SRD is gone and so is one of my hd's from back then. Might still have the lp's on my old pc but that'll have to wait until the weekend.

Edit: found the one with lp's on this pc :)

Nice! Even though that lacks the right-hand turns of a figure 8 that's still a lot of fun. I'll definitely have to try out a race on this. But yes, that under/overpass element is exactly what I'm talking about.

It was just an idea I had if it would be best to optimize the car for the big track or the small one. The mistake I made was forgetting that I know very little about making setups :p

It's great reminds me of the old dirt track in Michigan where on Saturday nights they raced a double zero. one lap one on a half mile track then crisscrossed to a quarter mile track. It was great racing
