The PROJECT: SHORT TRACK Design Team is thrilled to now make our massively updated version of this iconic Florida short track available to the NR2003 community!!!
New Smyrna Speedway near New Smyrna Beach in Florida is just 40 minutes from where I currently live. So this update project has long been on our PST To-Do list. Due to my close proximity to the track, getting reference pictures and watching many races there over the years has been a benefit to really being able to recreate it with as much detail as NR2003 will allow.
The World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing held there every February during Daytona Speed weeks has been an annual "can't miss" event for me and throngs of short track racing fans. My beloved Tour-Type Asphalt Modifieds just "LOVE" coming down every February to race on this track and they are a thrill to watch there in person. So in 2022 when New Smyrna Speedway held their first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race to kick of the WMT season, the PST team just had to finally tackle this project.
Built in 1964 as a half-mile banked dirt track by Clyde Hart, he quickly realized that the dirt racing surface was not conducive to good racing, so he decided to pave the track. Shortly after in 1966, the very first World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing was held and has continued every February during Daytona Speed Weeks featuring 9 straight nights of racing with many different classes including Tour-Type Modifieds, Super Late Models, Late Models, Florida Modifieds, Street Stocks and many more. Racers and fans come from all over the country to compete and enjoy the great Florida weather, beaches and racing.
With NSS being my current "home town track" I have had a tendency to get carried away with trying to recreate and capture every little detail of the place to make it look truly authentic. Way too much time has been spent on things that perhaps many sim racers won't even see. However, we know it's in there for the purists and the little things matter when trying to ramp up the "immersion" factor. As a result, this project has been over a year in the making.
This version of New Smyrna Speedway 2023 PST features working pit stalls for 26 cars. We have also implemented the traditional short track starting grid on the frontstretch so be sure to make note if you are on the inside or outside row when you pull off the grid for the full pace lap. Then get ready for some lightning fast and tight racing action on this high-banked (23 degrees) oval. To help, good baseline Fast setups are provided to get you immediately competitive with the A.I..
I want to give a shout out to my friends Charli Brown and Chris "Omodified" O'Shell who collaborated on the original New Smyrna Speedway for NR2003, 15 years ago in 2008. This updated version used that 2008 track as a base, although it is highly altered from it's original 2008 form. Also, PST team members Ben Althen, Ian Smythe, Mike Ehresman, Carl Sundberg and Wayne Anderson all have spent considerable time making miscellaneous contributions to this and mostly all PST projects. PLEASE be sure to read the CREDITS README file provided with the track for more detailed info on other contributors and how to get the best racing experience from New Smyrna 2023 PST.
