Ever imported an NR2003 car viewer file into Blender only for the model to have these weird dark spots, even when shining lights on it? I've had this problem with multiple obj's for YEARS in Blender and looked everywhere for a fix but never found anything, but I've finally figured it out.
An example of what I'm talking about with the NCS22 car viewer files: The sides are completely dark even though I have multiple 1500w point lights shining on all sides of the car. Even in viewport shading these sides would look dark,
Previously to get around the issue I added an emission to the texture with a value of 1, which would give the car even shading/lighting without any shadows or highlights. However it's hard to get any real reflections off the surface like this, so it wasn't a complete fix.
Now for the real solution:
1. Select the object with the dark textures
2. Switch to Edit Mode (tab key)
3. Press the A key to select all the vertices
4. Go to Mesh > Normals > Reset Vectors
5. Go back into Object Mode (Tab key again)
Now your model should be nice and bright!
We're not quite done yet though, because when you add a coat or metallic finish to the model after this, the shading and reflections won't be smooth (like below)
To get everything smoothed out, go back into Edit Mode and go to:
Mesh > Clean Up > Merge By Distance
Blender may ask for a distance value and for that just set it very low. I used 0.0001.
Go back into Object Mode, right click and select "shade smooth" (auto smooth may also work, your preference)
Now Ross is all nice and smooth!
Since these are all issues with the models and not the lighting or textures I believe everything should work with both Eevee and Cycles.
Hope this helps anyone who has been having the same issues!
