Looking for suggestions. I am currently using WinMip2 to create or update billboards on a personal track. WinMip2 is set to run as Admin and in XP SP2 compatibility mode. I can open and view mip and bmp files just fine. But when converting a bmp file to mip, and then try to save it, the small save "spinning circle" shows indefinitely. I have read through all the settings of a mip file, and tried all different combinations. I have changed the directory on my PC that I am working out of. I am hoping that I keep overlooking something very simple. Anyone have any other ideas they care to share?

And as for file image sizing, I should be good. I have tried by starting with a current mip file, converted to bmp. Edited in photoshop and saved as a new bmp. Now I cannot get that to convert back to a new mip.

Thanks!

First did you see this in the winmip help:
There is a known problem with opening bmp-Files which don´t follow the standards set by Microsoft for the fileformat. Especially Photoshop does a lot of stupid things to bitmaps. Make sure, a 4-bit bmp is stored with a 4-bit palette and a 4-bit data section, a 8-bit bmp is stored with a 8-bit palette and a 8-bit data section. 24-bit bitmaps usually should work well.

That was just one thing to note, I do know about the problem being saving.

I myself used GIMP and did not have a problem.

Somebody else might have a better answer but if photoshop is the problem
then trying gimp as a quick test would be worth it if your version of photo shop is the problem.

I appreciate the info and the ideas for further testing. I have opened the file in Gimp and exported to bmp as a 24bit. That file opens in WinMip2 without showing the image and the size appears to be incorrect. And just for giggles, trying to convert that to a mip doesn't save either.

I haven't done this in a while but what you're saying is bringing back memories of doing something wrong. I do remember having problems but it was because I made a mistake, I did change some sky mips and they did work when done the right way. Seems as though you might be missing a step since your having the same problem with both apps, I really can't remember what I had done when I had a problem, if the manual doesn't help you look for a tutorial.

I don't doubt that I'm just missing something. I'll read through again and try to catch it. What is bugging me is that if a setting is wrong, I would like to see an error or something. It's the illusion that it is saving but just never does that bothers me. I did this same thing just a handful of months ago and did fine. Thanks again for the help.

I'm going to try doing what you are trying and see what happens and I'll post back, I'll have to probably check the manual

Ok, I found the program does have error dialogs, your program is actually or most likely hanging that is why no error dialog.

What I did was make a bitmap in ms paint on my windows 11.

The bitmap I made was a default size and not powers of 2 and when I
tried to save it as a mip an error dialog came up for the height and width
being off.

I made it a 512x512 24-bit and then opened it in winmip2, next in the drop down box I selected .mip then clicked Save As from the menu and saved it as a mip. I did that no problem.

So I now think you are not doing anything wrong, it may be the program itself, you can try ms paint as a test and see if the same thing happens, if
it does maybe your app is somehow corrupt and maybe a new download of winmip2 would work.

I will add that I had no problems opening a mip and going to a bitmap and editing and back again, I remember now my problem I was having was just saving as a bmp when I should have saved as a mip.

So again I would say the program is hanging when you are trying to save, could be an anti virus thing also maybe, again I have windows 11 and it's fine, if you have windows 10 it should probably be ok.

Let me know what happens.

SteveMack, you're a machine! I've been banging my head against the wall over this. I just re-downloaded WinMip2 and all is good. So that simple thing I was missing was not trying this before. I overlooked that because it appeared that everything else seemed to be working as it should.

Thanks again for the help!!
