Random thought, whatever happened Nascar being interested doing an event in Australia. I know they were meetings but whatever happened?

Here's a nice video.

Known components:
- Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was in talks with both NASCAR and IndyCar during 2018 to try and bring one or both back to the Gold Coast by 2020.
- Since then, DJR and Penske have parted ways.
- Private equity firm Archer Capital has been trying to sell Supercars.
- What was the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit now has tram tracks on the road.
- The plague happened
- The plague happened
- The plague happened

Basically whatever interest there was, is now so far in the rear view mirror it now looks smaller than a gnat's nadger and less likely than Satan ice skating to work.

My guess is a combination of the pandemic (travel restrictions, mandatory quarantine), logistics issues and the overall cost.
Personally, I would like to see NASCAR do a Cup Series race in Australia, as Australia's car culture is quite similar to the U.S. However, the biggest roadblocks are cost and time zone differences.
Also, the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit is still active, but more recent races have used a shorter layout due to cost cutting.

It was.... now? Maybe not so much.

GM and Ford have recently trashed that.

Sales for June 2021:
437 - Mustang
0 - Camaro
1026 - Camry

GM currently don't sell cars in Australia.

Ford Sales June 2021: 8456. Of those 6058 were the Ranger T6.

GM did sell the Chevy Camaro in Australia, but it was discontinued in 2020 due to low sales, though they could bring it back down the road (despite leaving the Australian market, GM has a deal with HSV to import select Chevy models, specifically the Silverado, to Australia). Also, the Supercars Championship plans to use the Camaro as a replacement for the Holden Commodore in 2022.

HSV no longer exists.

GMSV (General Motors Special Vehicles) is a joint venture from Walkinshaw Group and GM which has to remanufacture LHD vehicles into RHD. The Silverado lists for A$115,000 on road.
Looking through old list pricing for the Commodore SS V8, you could have one for $37,890 or three of them for what it now costs to buy a Silverado.

Gotcha. 115,000 AUD (approx. 84,845 in USD) is a lot of money for a pickup truck. I bet that the bulk of the price covers importation and conversion costs.

Tray bed:
Silverado - 1776mm (probably because of MURICA)
Commodore UTE - 1829mm

So you pay more than 3x the price to get a shorter tray and a car which is less capable off road.
Yeah, it'll sell in the tens.

Not to mention that the Ute looks cool. Too bad that GM never got around to importing it to the U.S.

I would wager that it's even less likely that the Queensland Government after being in talks with IndyCar and NASCAR are going to bother any more because a thing happened:

Brisbane was awarded the 2032 Olympic Games.

I can't think of where else would apply for a NASCAR race. The longest oval in Australia is less than half a mile long.

There's also the Calder Park Thunderdome, a 1.119 oval in Melbourne. NASCAR staged an nonpoints race there in 1988, but the facility (specifically the grandstands) has been in disrepair for years.

Thats the answer - need at least a 1.5 mile speedway.... plus $$$

I like the thought, but MURICA doesn't use the metric system, unless you work in any number of trades that must use metrics (like engineering, medicine, construction, architecture, and etc etc etc lol)

I'd expect it to be the fact that NASCAR is losing money and popularity every year. For instance, look at the nineties, they hosted a cup event in Japan. That was in their golden era. They probably lack the resources and fanbase nowadays.
