Something that's always been in my mind is how other sim racers spend their time in non-simmy games.
Personally, outside of sims and simcade games, the best place to go has always been the arcade
My personal favorites are Daytona USA 2 and Scud Race (renamed to Sega Super GT here in the states.) Two very similar games, with DU2 being built off of Scud Race.
I used to absolutely rock both the Phantom car in DU2 and the McLaren in Scud - I used to be obsessed with Team Marubaku back in the day and tried to set impossible lap times like they did, which probably resulted in me wasting thousands in quarters.
Got the chance to play both again outside of an emulator at some Missouri arcade, and I've definitely gotten alot better.
Daytona USA 2 also fascinates me because it's almost like Japan's huge love-letter to stock car racing - not only were the sounds and environment actually captured at Daytona, but they went as far as to make a real life replica of the default car and use it to get sounds and whatnot. It's a beautiful game and shows just how loved NASCAR was worldwide circa 1998.
What's your favorite arcade racing game? Lemme know, I got too many quarters in my change holder!
