I've been working on this thing for a while... Feels like since 2002 (!), but no; that's not true.

So... what is it?
I've always wanted a career mode; something that guided me through all of the great real-life series/NR2003 mods; something that contains pertinent scheduling information to help me recreate real races; something that takes my results and puts a monetary value on it!

Though this is not finished, I have pictured here a LibreOffice Calc spreadsheet based file that provides a LOT of data from the 2002 season and guides the user through their racing career! My idea is to have multiple years so that once the user has completed 2002, they can move 2003 and bring their statistics with them!

Does this sort of idea excite any one else?

There's a lot of things I've already built in to this (including at least one idea yet to implement), but I'm curious as to what other ideas there may be that I may not have considered!
From the super low-key screenshot you can't tell too much, but the screenshot is just a teaser... I actually want to read comments from other people, so if this idea excites you, give me a reply with your thoughts/ideas for what you would like in a career mode.

You guys... SMH. lol
Well, I thought my first post might have been too vague, so let me break it down like a 90s wrestling faction:

This is not an .exe. :( Oh how I WISH I had that knowledge to make this a program you could open, but I don't. So I'm working with what I got here, and so this is a file that can be opened with a free Excel knockoff known as LibreOffice Calc. To clarify more, the user needs to just download LibreOffice Calc, then open this file to use it.

You can simulate a lot of things on this file, and if you have an imagination this is really fun! All the 2002 schedules of a lot of racing series are built in to the file so that you can race your 2002 season how you want.
Maybe you're wondering, "why 2002?" Simple... It's the year I picked.

To put this simply about what you do with this, I'll insert some pictures!
First, everyone starts on the Pre-Season tab.

racing-career-example-preseason-tab.jpg

As you can see, you're asked some general questions about you, how much money you're starting this season off with, and how many fans.
In this example you can see we're Tony Danza! A 46-year-old male from Auburn, KY who's starting super late as a race car driver. He's got $1,500 to play with and, oh dear... :/ Just mom and dad for fans it appears.

Tony Danza can race in ANY of these divisions/tours/series as they are all built into the Racing Career: 2002 Season file.
They are:
Street Stocks (includes a generic schedule like a local race track would have)
Late Models (again, includes a typical local race track schedule)
Super Late Models (2002 CRA Sunoco Super Series schedule)
Modifieds (2002 NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour schedule)
Northwest (2002 Raybestos Northwest Series schedule)
Midwest (2002 Re/MAX Challenge Series schedule)
Southeast (2002 Hills Bros. All Pro Series schedule)
Southwest (2002 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour schedule)
USAR (2002 USAR Hooters Pro Cup schedule)
ASA (2002 ASA National Tour schedule)
CASCAR (2002 CASCAR Super Series schedule)
NASCAR North (2002 NASCAR Busch North Series schedule)
NASCAR West (2002 NASCAR Winston West Series schedule)
ARCA (2002 ARCA Re/MAX Series schedules)
NASCAR Truck (2002 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule)
NASCAR GN (2002 NASCAR Busch Grand National Series schedule)
NASCAR Cup (2002 NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule)

So.... now what?!
Time to race as Tony Danza!
You go into NR2003 (or any game really) and race the races OR you can just use your imagination and simulate the races! Up to you :)

For our example, Mr. Danza has chosen to enter the 2002 NASCAR Winston West Series! Probably because he thought he should be closer to Hollywood to start an acting career, but actually because it was the shortest, easiest 2002 schedule I could manipulate in one picture to show you the whole series tab!!

The races are over, let's see how he did and I'll be able to explain what's going on with this file and some things that make the Racing Career so nifty!

racing-career-example-nascar-west-tab.jpg

Some take-aways and things to notice in this screen shot:
- At the top-left, notice Danza doesn't own enough equipment to start his own team in the Winston West Series (though he does own a truck & trailer). Therefore his role on race day will be as a "Driver."
- In this particular series, drivers get a 35% cut of any winnings so... not bad! (that information is to the right, inside the orange "2002 Winston West Series" heading).
- At the top right are Tone-Tone's stats. They change in real-time based on each race that's ran, and will even continue over from season to season.

What the user gets to do is, via drop-down menus, select the Total Entrants, Role, and Sponsorship. Next, they race using the race stats provided. Note how you have a date, a track, the race name, the purse, the fan count, the number of laps, and (not pictured in this series as I couldn't find it) below the date is even a cell for time/time of day so you know if the race should be held at a day track or a night track (or even what hour of the day for fancy AI iRacers).

After the user's virtual race ends they open up the sheet and select via drop-downs their finishing position and the status of their car (with many status' to choose from that affect the sheet including even "Start & Park").

Let's analyze the graphic above and check out what happened. I made up that Tony gets three races for this Winston West team and they're all at big tracks!
We see that Danza finished 3rd at California, and 7th place at Kansas which upped Tony's "D Rating" to two stars!

Understand that many two star tiered sponsors noticed ol' Tone, but Big Lots was the lucky chosen one for Vegas. Notice how for the last race of the series at Las Vegas, Big Lots expectation was a Top 3 finish. Tony must have thought he could repeat or better his Kansas success...
However :(
We see he blew it.
Yes, worse than being flipped in a go-kart race on your own TV show, Tony not only crashed the car in practice (having to bring out a backup car), but he finished running, but poorly, with the backup car. :(

That's his three races unfortunately. Where does he go from here? Not sure.
At the bottom of the tab we find a total of all of his 2002 Winston West series results under "Series Statistics."
Out of three starts his average finish was 13.7. He gained over $7,000 dollars to his bank account, but he actually lost fans. At the top right in the "Driver Statistics" bar, he has -17 fans. I mean, he just started his career and we know of 17 people that think he should stop racing? That's harsh. Tip: don't simulate the sheet as Danica Patrick.

So that's an example of what a Series sheet looks like. All the data in the Series sheets came from the web. Some is fudged due the data for things like fans and prize money just plain and simple not existing, but a ton is for real.

You may also notice two other tabs before the actual Series tabs and those are Garage:

racing-career-garage-tab.jpg

This is where you buy and sell race cars, equipment, and even hire personnel to get you on your way to owning your own team.
Note: once you own all of the needed assets to own a team in a specific Series, your Role on race day in that series now expands as you can select not only "Driver," but also "Owner" or "Both" (represents a driver/owner).

The other tab is Calendar shown here:

racing-career-calendar-tab.jpg

This is where EVERY race in EVERY series is shown so that, if you'd like to, you can pick and choose where and what to race based on the prize money, location, or date! Maybe you only want to race the big money races to start your own team next year in 2003. Maybe you want to race every race in chronological order. Maybe you only want to race at "Raceways" and not "Speedways!" Look, the point is it's all the races in the 2002 season (almost 350 races!) and you can sort them all by the headings above!

So that's my long post. Just thought I could get away with my first post and people would get it. Not the way to do it.

Am I on the right road here?
What do people think?
What would be a neat feature?
...Am I the only one that thinks this looks fun?

* crickets *

I am definitely following this.

I did work on an Excel career mode of my own which has teams, sponsors, results. It was based off a prestige system to work your way up through the ranks and also included financials like race winnings and expenses. It was totally dynamic and depending on your results, would help guide you to the right series, teams and sponsors. Database for it is huge, with fictional and real sponsors and teams depending on year. It probably has 75 series, 400-ish race tracks, 28,000 USA towns/cities (uses coordinates to calculate driving expenses from player's hometown to track), endless fictional team and sponsors, and in the process of adding 9,000 real sponsors, and major NASCAR teams. My biggest problem is re-randomizing without losing existing team/sponsor/statistical data automatically. So some of it is manual. One of the reasons I stopped working on it recently.

It would be great to get an external career mode created that can be used flawlessly. Can't wait to see how this turns out and how it works.

Thanks @Tigerman500 ! Appreciate the support.

And @WanderingVTer ... Where have you been all this time?! lol
I am so glad to read your reply! Your database DOES sound huge and almost like an iteration of career mode that I had a year or two ago! It was just one file that included data from 1949 till now. Yeah... the thing was HUGE! It included all kinds of series like NASCAR, Sprint Cars, IMSA, SST Stadium Trucks, Four Cylinders, etc., but there came a point where it was way too much to handle formula-wise. Then not to mention if I wanted to change/alter/add something; it was confusing and messy. Thanks for sharing your ideas and experience!! You have my idea-maker bubbling with your travel expenses and teams ideas. Wish we could have gotten in touch sooner!

Backstory: The first version of this that I created was in 2015 and it too had a prestige system that I called an "EF rating." I don't remember what EF stood for, but I'm sure it was way cool and made sense to me at the time!
Currently in this version, I have something similar in place called a "D Rating," but it's primarily a sponsorship controller. FYI: I couldn't come up with a better name, so if anyone has a better name suggestion it would be super cool of you to throw it out!
I also strayed away from the systems that held the user in a series until they improved. A file like this turns NR2003 (and other games of that nature) into a grind game, and I didn't want it to be too serious. I definitely like the idea and have implemented such a thing before, I just haven't found a way to use that system AND keep it fun.

I just want this to be cool because our offline racing communities deserve it. I'm putting this together with NR2003 in mind, but this is for any one; from the person running a ModSquad mod in NASCAR Heat to the person who races iRacing AI.
Y'all keep replying I'm taking notes! :nerd:

@readytowrestle Yeah, been in the background a lot. I've been around the sim since day one. Got sucked into the sim right when entering junior high and have my love of racing, sports, and technology converge over the years. Never find enough time to devote to one thing at a time. With the COVID lockdowns, I was able to work on some various projects for the sim. I have a long overdue external ticker mod to finish, this career mode, and also an owner mode.

To help with the organization, I did different sheets for each part of information. One handles the track data, the other has sponsors, another has teams, ect. If I wanted to add something to the track data (lets say track-specific entry fees), I can just add the number on the track sheet then adjust one formula I have for my expenses calculations within the results sheet. This way it allows for things to be added or changed in an organized way.

My prestige system is is 0-100. Based on your results each race it will gain you prestige which unlocks better series, sponsors, and teams. It is a very grindy system where it takes into consideration the series, number of entries, laps completed/led, finish position, and if you DQ or not. You could make it less grindy for you by allowing the prestige to multiply by 4 or 5 times. Right now with how mine is set up, a win while leading the most laps in 4-cyl gains you 1 prestige point.

The financials of it allow you to attract race fans each race based on your finish and gain merchandise sales from those fans. You also have race winnings and sponsorship payouts (adding sponsorship expectations will happen at some point). Based on where you consider your home town and where the track is located for the race, there is a calculation based on LAT/LON coordinates that figures out travel expenses. I may add race expenses (tires/fuel/entry fees) down the road.

I have a main page where it tracks your overall career statistics and maintains your overall prestige, fans, career earnings, and current account balance. All you do is use the drop-downs to select the year and series as you race and refresh the specific page after populating your race data on the results page.

The problem with Excel is that it doesn't look aesthetically pleasing and to run formulas or randomize for new sponsors/team data can be irritating for someone who just wants to press one button instead of going through various steps. I have been trying to create buttons with Macros for these randomizers, but Excel doesn't want to play nicely and will randomize all data instead of the specific data I want. And this is with data refresh turned off in the document.

Hopefully some of the ways I have mine set up can help you in your goal for your career document. You can do almost anything in Excel-type programs to make it work. Just have to be clever with formulas and do a lot of trial and error. The beauty of these documents is, as you said, can be used in any racing career mode. It doesn't have to be exclusively to NR2003.

To let you and others see how formulas may work in Excel for something like this, here (hopefully it will show up) is just one formula I have which calculates race expenses:

=IF(F2>0,(Data!$T$2*(3443.8985*ACOS((SIN((INDEX(Locations!$B$2:$B$28342,SMALL(IF(Locations!$A$2:$A$28342=Driver!$C$5,ROW(Locations!$A$2:$A$28342)-ROW(INDEX(Locations!$A$2:$A$28342,1,1))+1),1)))*PI()/180)*SIN((INDEX(Tracks!$F$2:$F$387,SMALL(IF(Tracks!$A$2:$A$387=F2,ROW(Tracks!$A$2:$A$387)-ROW(INDEX(Tracks!$A$2:$A$387,1,1))+1),1)))*PI()/180)+COS((INDEX(Locations!$B$2:$B$28342,SMALL(IF(Locations!$A$2:$A$28342=Driver!$C$5,ROW(Locations!$A$2:$A$28342)-ROW(INDEX(Locations!$A$2:$A$28342,1,1))+1),1)))*PI()/180)*COS((INDEX(Tracks!$F$2:$F$387,SMALL(IF(Tracks!$A$2:$A$387=F2,ROW(Tracks!$A$2:$A$387)-ROW(INDEX(Tracks!$A$2:$A$387,1,1))+1),1)))*PI()/180)*COS((INDEX(Tracks!$G$2:$G$387,SMALL(IF(Tracks!$A$2:$A$387=F2,ROW(Tracks!$A$2:$A$387)-ROW(INDEX(Tracks!$A$2:$A$387,1,1))+1),1)))*PI()/180-(INDEX(Locations!$C$2:$C$28342,SMALL(IF(Locations!$A$2:$A$28342=Driver!$C$5,ROW(Locations!$A$2:$A$28342)-ROW(INDEX(Locations!$A$2:$A$28342,1,1))+1),1)))*PI()/180)))*-1.5)*2),"")

Now that my brain and everyone else's brain hurt looking at that formula, I will stop there. lol

Oh @WanderingVTer ... you got my fingers flying over here! I've started from scratch for another time to re-do and improve the file! I took a lot of time the past couple of days and started writing down what else I wanted, and how to fix and simplify some things as well. I also took another look at, and drew some layout/look inspiration from the current Heat series. I think this version of the file will be my best effort and I'm excited!
I hope to work in it more in the coming week and I'll post a screenshot real soon!

racing-career-2002-v2-cup-example.jpg
The first two races in the 2002 Winston Cup sheet/tab with the first race completely filled out.

Well as I said in my last post, I started over!

The most noticeable difference is the layout! The old layout was made to look like a checkbook because I had no other ideas. I mean, there was a time where I was creepily fixated on this looking like a checkbook. Also, since 2015, every version of this I've made has had the checkbook layout so... maybe too for nostalgia purposes I kept it around? Either way, I like this new layout better; it has more spacing, to which I was able to add more stats and spruce up the presentation. Oddly enough too I got inspiration from the newer NASCAR Heat games!

So I've done a lot, here are some highlights off the top of my head:

New Feature - CURRENT DATE: This feature makes running the sheet waaayyyyy more hardcore. In the past you were able to run whatever race you wanted and whenever... Now that's not possible.
Example: if you're running multiple series, you'll need to plan ahead because if you start the Cup race on Sunday, you won' t be able to go back in time to run the Busch race that was on Saturday. For those of us who are detail freaks (which is probably half the people reading this), this adds another real-life element to your career. As badly as some might want to, real-life drivers can't race back in time and now virtually, neither can you! lol

Feature - PREFERRED DISTANCE: This was in the last rendition but not sure I covered what it was. This is a percentage that adjusts the laps for all races in that series. It's a feature that's super helpful when setting up races in single race modes.

Feature - NEW COSTS: Back on the checkbook layout I was really cramped for space so most Race Weekend costs were lumped together in a heading called "Race Fees."
Now, with more space, they're broken down into Payroll, Race Prep, Travel, Per Diem (fancy talk for the dollar allowance for extra things that need paid for), and Damage Repairs.
Payroll is based on whether you have a person, a crew, or an entire team helping you.
Race Prep is the dollar amount for all the work that gets done at the shop like parts, pieces, late nights, etc..
Travel is a new feature (thanks to @WanderingVTer ) that for real calculates the distance you're travelling to get to each race. When you select your "Shop Location" on the Pre-Season tab, the sheet bases all travelling from that location using latitude and longitude! There are thousands of towns available to choose from and, most likely, your town is represented!

Feature - NEW VEHICLES: Since the last sheet I've added four new vehicles/series: Four Cylinders, Big Block Dirt Modifieds, Dirt Late Models, and Dirt Sprint Cars! These mods exist for NR2003 so, why not!

So that's where I'm at so far! Hope peeps be excited! The other sheets I've shown off previously in this thread such as Garage and Store still exist, however I've upped their presentation. I hope to show those soon as well... I'm trying not to put every little thing in one post.
See you for now, come back later!

I’m just not sure how to go about the releasing part. I really do need someone other than me to test and try, just not sure how to go about it! Maybe create and release a 2021 version with Cup only?

I’m down for that! Though it will have to be a Cup only version because… it currently is a Cup only version. lol
Real talk: Where the project stands, I THINK I’m ready to add other series however, that’s where testing comes in; if I can work any bugs there might be out of the Cup series, that will prevent bugs in the others as I duplicate the Cup page, change it to Busch; duplicate again, change to Truck, etc. etc.

@Bryan 010810 Is there any specific Cup year you’d be most interested in trying? Changing the schedules is quite easy and I thought you might be interested in perhaps a 1997 Cup version? Just throwing it out there.
