Provided that technology progressed to the point where they could run thousand mile electric motor races as seamlessly as they do now, what would be so bad about this?

If petrol eventually becomes at such a premium that it is prohibitively expensive, then why not?

It will happen eventually, just because of the eventual economics of technological advancement. The cars would not be that small unless there were a way to protect the driver without bulky roll bars, but electric motors (or some sort of motor other than a gasoline/petrol engine) are something that will eventually happen. I know it is unpopular but it is unpreventable, and after a generation or so no one will care anymore.
