I have searched the internet, including this forum, but I have not been able to find a solution to my problem. Indeed, I have not even been able to find anyone else saying that they have had my problem, so I am hoping that, perhaps, someone here will be able to help me.

I re-installed NASCAR Racing 2003, a few years ago, after being away from the sim for nearly 15 years. I was very impressed with the mass of mods and carsets that had been made for the sim in the interval. I tried out many mods, carsets, and tracks, and almost everything (with the exception of a couple of tracks) worked perfectly. Then, within the last month or two, my problems started.

I first found that when I installed a new carset into a mod that I already had installed and working, sometimes the carset would not work. Specifically, the cars would appear in the list on the left, but the cars would not be seen rotating in the window on the right. Attempting to go to a track would fail because NR2003 would state the it "could not load cars". This would happen with carsets that had worked earlier, as well as newly downloaded ones.

The next thing was that newly installed mods would not work. This would happen with mods that had been installed and worked correctly earlier, as well as with completely new mods. The mod will appear in the game, but its mainback will not display, the game's default "cup" mainback appearing instead, and then the carset problem above, with the cars not loading, occurs. Presently, it appears that no newly installed mods will work, although some carsets installed into already installed mods do work.

These problems occur both in my current NR2003 installations, as well as completely clean new installations.
New installations of NR2003 work fine both with the original NR2003 cup carset and with all of the mods and carsets that I already have installed in other instances of NR2003 and copy over from an already installed instance of NR2003, but new mods and many carsets, including ones that had worked earlier, will not work.

Any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
My NR2003 installations have been both from my original 19 year old CD and a fully patched version downloaded from a reputable NR2003 website (whose name escapes me at present). All have been fully patched and have always worked and continue to work perfectly with the original game cars and already installed mods and carsets copied from other NR2003 installations.

Ok you carset has to mach the Physics of the mod. Physics as in cup , gns ,cts ,pta
Your mod's there is a limet on how many you can have in the series folder that number is 16 if you go over that only the first 16 will show up
You can find the Procedure_to_change_NR2003_Mod_physics here
Here is the car file conveter

Thank you, however, as I explained, even mods that were newly downloaded or had worked before now fail to work even in a completely clean new installation of NR2k3, which means that the cars match the physics of the mod because they are the original cars of the mod, and a new installation of NR2k3 has no mods installed so no mod limit can apply.
The car physics always match the mod physics when they fail to load.
The number of mods that I have installed in my three installations of NR2k3 are 11, 8, and 0, all of which are below the mod limit.
What could be the reason for the mod's mainback not displaying, as I explained above?

Look at your car files make sure they don't have a space in the name ANYWHERE

Hi, you have to have at least the 1.2.0.1. patch installed for the mods to work.
Also as highbank said check your car files for spaces usually like cup .car
They should end cup.car also I did have a problem with a roster file which is a MASM Listing file .lst it was not noticeably bad but was corrupt, you can delete a roster file and make a new roster in the opponent manager, your roster files are in each of your mods car folders, that did cause me very similar problems you are having. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you for all of your suggestions.

The bad news is that I had already checked all of this.
All my installations of NR2k3 are fully patched.
No car files have any spaces. (I had noticed that many car files that I downloaded from NNracing had spaces and I just automatically eliminated them simply to make them shorter and to look like all other car files.
I make individual race by race roster .lst files, so all my .lst files are originally blank and have always worked with all mods earlier and continue to do so, although I have experienced the peculiarity of all of the content of some .lst files disappearing but I solved that problem by altering the name of the files slightly, assuming that there was some sort of a conflict with .lst file names.

The good news is that two mods that had worked earlier, but would not work when I re-installed them only yesterday, are now working again after I re-installed the exact same mods yet again today. (They were the Project Wildfire executable installer 2003 Trans-Am pta mod and the ASA gns mod for early 1990's Trans-Am.)

Alas, the Cup 1990 cts and the GNS98 mods still won't work, (which are the four mods that I tried out again today)
and, of course, I am quite clueless as to why, or I wouldn't be bothering you folks about this.

When you extract the mods are you opening the the RAR or ZIP file and extracting all or are you selecting the items one by one with certain mods? I remember having some trouble when trying to do that. Also as martinrace said you can't change the mods folder name and some have underscores in the folder name that have to be there. It has been awhile since I installed my mods so I am going from memory so forgive me if I am off.
I'm adding on to this post again, also your folders have to be correct, I myself have ended up with for instance CARS folders inside CARS folders, so the app is looking for /cars not /cars/cars

Bingo! Eureka!! Jubilation and Exultation!!!
The wild shot hit the bull's eye!

Making sure that the name of the mod dat files matched the names of the mod folders solved all the problems.
I had been renaming the mod folders in order to have NR2k3 display the mods in series and chronological rather than mod name order. This had been working without the mod dat files being similarly renamed. Why the mods worked this way earlier and then suddenly mostly (but occasionally not all) stopped working is a mystery to me that I don't need to solve.

Thank you very much for your spot-on wild guess, martinrace, and also thank you to everyone else who read my post and made suggestions.
