Here's the best suggestion I can give you. Get paint shop pro, it's much easier to use than photoshop and or gimp. First thing to learn is the pen tool, how to use it. You'll be half way home after that.

There are free downloads for the older versions out there, you just gotta look for them. Photoshop will also get you what you need, again look for an older free version (but one that isn't so old your newer computer won't run it). There are a lot of guys that do great with GIMP, so the world won't end or anything if you have to use it.
