SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS' MARCUS SMITH SHARES VISION FOR REVITALIZED NORTH WILKESBORO SPEEDWAY (credit to Speedway Motorsports):

Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith shared his vision for the future of North Wilkesboro Speedway during the Wilkes County Chamber of Commerce 75th Membership Celebration Thursday night.

Earmarked within the North Carolina state budget that was passed in November was $18 million toward infrastructure improvements at the historic 0.625-mile facility. That money, Smith said, will go a long way toward modernizing the iconic venue to bring motorsports, concerts and other entertainment options to the Wilkes County region.

“The future of North Wilkesboro Speedway is bright,” Smith told a group of 250 people gathered for the event. “There is a great opportunity to revive this fantastic venue to be, not just a race track, but a place that can host lots of events, a place that people will come to from far away and enjoy the community, enjoy the region and enjoy special events.”

Thanks to the efforts of local volunteer groups, cleanup around the 75-year-old race track began several months ago and attention can now turn to prioritizing the necessary upgrades and refurbishment projects to reopen North Wilkesboro Speedway. Smith highlighted his vision for the property through a series of renderings that showcased not only a return to racing, but also alternative uses like serving as a concert venue.

“Water, sewer, electricity, roads, connectivity – those are a lot of the building blocks that we need to get done,” Smith said. “We want to keep the character of the property, celebrate the history, but, of course, make it safe, convenient and enjoyable for everyone who comes to visit.

“In the car world, I would call it a resto-mod. It’s going to look old, but it’s going to work new. When you think about nostalgic opportunities, this is one of those one-in-a-million opportunities.

“Our hope is to celebrate the history and look forward to the future. North Wilkesboro Speedway is an amazing, historic place for NASCAR. It’s almost like Fenway Park is to baseball. I think, with this money from the state and the American Rescue Plan, we can make some dreams a reality at North Wilkesboro Speedway.”

Smith noted the “real possibility” of bringing a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event. “We specifically - and I’ll thank Marcus Lemonis, the CEO of Camping World for his voice of support - we specifically think it’s a real possibility to bring back NASCAR and the Camping World Truck Series to North Wilkesboro Speedway,” he said. “Those races are nationally televised events, and it’s a national NASCAR touring series. We have a number of those (races) in our portfolio, and I would love to see one of those here.”

Seeing renderings of the re-envisioned speedway and hearing Smith’s ideas for the future of the property was welcome news to lifelong residents, community leaders and business owners.

“This means everything to anybody that lives in Wilkes County,” said Terri Parsons, widow of NASCAR legend Benny Parsons and a longtime advocate of revitalizing the facility. “By the speedway coming back, this has just turned a lightbulb on in this whole community again. You can see by the attendance tonight, everybody in the town, everybody in the county supports it and wants to see something come alive out there.”

“I’m very excited to hear the ideas that are coming from Speedway Motorsports,” said Rep. Jeffrey Elmore, whose district includes Wilkes County. “This track is a symbol of our community. He (Smith) used the word ‘hope.’ It’s very exciting to see the vision that he’s putting forth and how it’s tying to the past and looking to the future.”

Smith also used the opportunity to thank the community for its efforts – from cleanup crews to business and political leaders – to help return the legendary facility to its former glory.

“Bringing back races, bringing back special events, bringing back tourism, creating a very special place where the community can gather, it’s exciting,” he said.“When you think about nostalgic opportunities, this is one of those one-in-a-million opportunities.

“I think there’s a bright future ahead for North Wilkesboro Speedway. It wouldn’t happen without the amazing community support that’s in this room as well as the people who have been out at the speedway to help us bring the speedway back. Anybody might have said this place is too far gone, but this community rallied and brought it to a place where we can rebuild it and it can be a fantastic jewel.”

NASCAR Establishes Tougher Penalty System for the Cup Series in 2022 Regarding the Next Gen Car (credit to NASCAR.com):

NASCAR officials released a more stringent penalty structure for the 2022 Cup Series season on Monday, introducing a list of deterrence options that includes revoking playoff eligibility for the most severe violations.

The three-tiered system – from L1 to L3 – was added to the Cup Series Rule Book on Monday. The format was put in place before the debut of the Next Gen car model, which hits the track in season-opening events next month.

The structure reserves its harshest L3 penalty options for the tampering and counterfeiting of Next Gen single-source vendor parts. Those infractions join testing policy violations with infractions in three significant off-limits areas – engine, tires, fuel – under the L3 umbrella. That heading includes the deduction of Cup Series points, playoff points, crewmember suspensions and postseason bans among the penalty options.

“To make sure that all of those things stay above board, there’s going to have to be a culture shift from the way that the teams and NASCAR, for that matter, have done business,” said Scott Miller, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition. “So this deterrence model has more meat in it, more meaningful penalties, but I think we all thought that it was it was time for this with the introduction of the new car.”

Penalties for lesser violations found in pre-race inspection during a race weekend remain largely intact. For all other in-race and post-race infractions at the L1 level and up, NASCAR competition officials will disqualify the offending teams and consider the following options:

Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer, had hinted during Next Gen testing last month at Charlotte Motor Speedway that tougher penalties — including postseason bans – were under consideration. “It used to be ‘let’s see what we can get away with and go racing.’ That’s not the case with this car,” O’Donnell said. “We’ve built this car to try and make it as fundamentally sound as possible in collaboration with the teams and then really put it on teams, and drivers and pit crews to go out there and win races.”

Miller reiterated that notion Monday, saying that teams and other industry partners had advocated for the change.

“If there aren’t penalties for altering parts and pieces on the new car, then the business model with new car won’t work,” Miller said. “So it was definitely something that was pressed for hard by the teams, and we’re doing our due diligence for establishing all the inspection procedures and all the different things. The rule book is a completely new rule book with lots more specifics than there were in the past.”

The last major update of the NASCAR deterrence system came before the 2017 season, when the L1-L2 structure replaced the P1-through-P6 penalty classification that dated to 2014. For 2019, competition officials added disqualification as a consequence for post-race L1- and L2-grade penalties. Disqualification remains in place as a penalty this season, with teams in violation relegated to last-place points, stripped of any stage points and playoff points accrued in that race.

Adding playoff points and postseason eligibility to the mix this year provides an extra layer of deterrence. Regular-season points penalties were not as effective a punishment, Miller says, under a postseason format that includes points resets and playoff berths for race winners, regardless of their points totals.

“If a regular-season violation has playoff ramifications to it,” Miller said, “obviously I think the teams will take that much more seriously than they ever did points with the current playoffs and playoff-point format that we have.”

With NASCAR shifting to a single, center-locking lug nut for the larger wheels of the Next Gen car, the rule book’s penalty language for unsecured lugs for the five lug-nut wheels has gone away. What remains is a penalty section for the loss of an improperly installed tire/wheel, which still carries a four-race suspension for the offending team’s crew chief and two additional crewmembers.

Racin’ Boys’ Lee Spencer reports that Greg Biffle was sighted at the Richard Childress Racing headquarters on Friday to get fitted for a seat to drive the #44 Chevy for new team N. Y. Racing

Be nice to have him back. He hasn't raced in cup since the end of the 2016 season.

I'm sure it was mentioned... but what is the official position of the name/banner this year? 1 manufacturer logo and name to the right?

Also, what fonts? Is it still 'Stainless Black' for the front & 'Stainless Cont Black' for the rear?

Kaz Grala to Attempt to Qualify for Daytona 500 for The Money Team Racing (credit to Jayski):

Known worldwide for his bold moves and ostentatious flare, legendary five-division world champion and boxing Hall of Famer Floyd “Money” Mayweather shook up the sporting world again today by announcing he will partner with sunglass giant Pit Viper when The Money Team Racing (TMTR) makes the long-awaited NASCAR Cup Series debut of its No. 50

Pit Viper Chevrolet at the Daytona 500 on February 20, 2022. One of the fastest fighters in boxing history, Mayweather will have driver Kaz Grala behind the wheel of his new NASCAR NextGen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 with an engine from ECR at the 64th Annual Daytona 500, held at the iconic Daytona International Speedway in Florida.

“I love fast cars and I love to compete. I know NASCAR will not be easy, but anything easy isn’t worth doing to me,” Mayweather exclaimed. “With that being said, this move into auto racing seems to be a perfect fit for the Mayweather brand.”

Kaz Grala will lead the fight on the track as TMTR’s driver for select races in 2022. Grala has already proven success at Daytona as the youngest NASCAR winner in the track’s storied history. The 23- year-old driver has finished in the top-10 in half of his NASCAR Cup Series races to date, including his debut when he drove through the field to an impressive seventh-place finish on the Daytona Road Course.

“It’s an honor to be behind the wheel for Floyd Mayweather’s entrance into NASCAR. It’s a really exciting time in our sport as it globalizes and reaches new audiences,” said Grala. “I know Floyd is here to win, and I absolutely feel that everyone involved in this program is capable of making that happen. We know we will need some time to grow together as a new organization, but I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of building this team from the ground up.”

Calling the shots at the top of the pit box will be NASCAR Cup Series winning crew chief, Tony Eury Jr. The co-owner of TMT Racing, William Auchmoody, an associate of Mayweather’s and a longtime member of the NASCAR community, will serve as the team’s general manager. Brent Johnson of ONE Entertainment will handle Brand Mayweather activations along with James “P-Reala” McNair, president of The Money Team.

“This deal has been a long time coming and we are finally at the starting line.” said William Auchmoody. “Every time we thought we would be able to hit the track, something happened, including a global pandemic. One thing I have learned from Floyd Mayweather is that sometimes your best offense is a great defense and now we are here going to our first race at this year’s Daytona 500. We are very excited to be racing!”

StarCom Racing’s Michael & Matt Kohler and Bill Woehlemann have a vested interest in the team as well.

“We are extremely thankful to TMTR for the opportunity to be a part of this team and are excited to join them on this journey,” said Bill Woehlemann.
