Two questions to this.

1. Does Newman have the fire to keep going?
2. Do RFKRM or whatever they'll be called want to run two or three cars?

If the answer to 1 is no, he retires and Brad comes in.
  • If the answer to 2 is two in this case, nothing changes.
  • If the answer to 2 is three in this case, they find another driver. Maybe a JTG car if they downsize, or a rookie (Herbst for funding? Particularily if KB's Monster sponsorship is no longer required)
If the answer to 1 is yes, he keeps on and Brad comes in in a third car.
1, No FIre... He is out
2. Is Yes, 2nd car..

Anyway that's my thoughts for now.

Ganassi "swapped" 41 for 1 at some point.
It was never "swapped". Ganassi and Earnhardt Inc. merged in 2008. DEI had the #1, #01, #8, and #15 while Ganassi had the #40 (part-time), #41, and #42. Due to NASCAR's 4-car limit per team, the new EGR had to condense down from 7 cars. The numbers removed were the #01, #15, #40, and #41. The #8 was moved to a part-time gig, leaving the #42 and #1 cars as full-time entries in 2009. After Teressa was removed from the ownership list between 2013 and 2014, the team went back to being pure Ganassi and the font of the #1 changed to what it is now, where until that point it was still the old DEI version (the #42 continued to be the Ganassi-styled version throughout) since that car was the last remnant of that organization. Chip stuck with that number more than likely because Circle Sport was using the #40 and SHR has adopted the #41 for 2014.

I know all of this.

The timeline of numbers on that particular charter are:
42/01 - because of Kyle Petty
41 - from 2003 when Casey Mears gets signed.
1 - from 2009 when Truex has the ride at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. 41 as a number is vacated.

40 dies in 2008.

The current 42 is an invention in 2003; though it kind of follows a convoluted line of confusion back to NEMCo Motorsports' #87 with front row Joe in 1993.

DEI's charters basically sink beneath the waves... and then get phoenixed.

Are you sure about these charters? From what I remember, NASCAR charter system started in 2016... you are talking about charters in 2003 and 09 !! o_O

No.
Well whatever you want to call the existing system of owners/points which carried over from the previous seasons and determined eligibility for if you had to pre-qualify/qualify etc.

...and if you tell that to the young people today, they won't believe you.

Question - Since Matt Kaulig is going CUP racing next year (announce today) and if 23xl adds a second car - where are they getting charters from? I don't know of anyone leaving CUP and if any will be available?

IIRC both of them have said they are willing to run without charters. Heck Denny Hamlin even said that the system might undergo some major changes when the deal is up.

23XI being thrown into the mix is also interesting. Kurt has said that he wants to run one more year, but if 23XI comes calling for a second car, I’d assume he would take it? The person filling the 1 would be interesting...

Here’s my (wild) theory for that scenario. Monster and Dr Pepper are rival sponsors, Monster would likely not follow Kurt to 23XI because Dr Pepper is contracted to the team. They already have sponsors willing to step up for a second car, DraftKings is one of them. Now, NOS is owned by Monster Beverage. Monster Energy stays at CGR as they hire Ricky Stenhouse Jr to drive the 1 car for 2022.

Kurt has probably spoken to Trackhouse and 23XI.
Trackhouse wants a second car and are apparently willing to go unchartered to do it.

Suraez - 99
Kurt Busch - 97?

Does JR Motorsports buy into/up Ganassi?
Does Kaulig lease a Rick Ware charter?

If I was Kurt, I would go to 23xl.... Number ? who knows.

JR Motorsports and Ganassi... with new cheap cars (Gen 7) for all to run next year, they don't need to join them. They are going to run a chevy engine and they are all built by Hendricks/ECR

I can see why 23XI and Trackhouse are going after Kurt Busch. He is a good, but aging driver who can help build up one of these upstart teams. On top of that, 23XI/Trackhouse will probably want Busch to help mentor Bubba Wallace/Daniel Suarez due to him being in the Cup Series for 21 years.

As for Chip Ganassi Racing, I think the team is on the decline. They've lost multiple major sponsors (Target, CreditOne Bank, Cessna) over the past few years while Ganassi was forced to fire Kyle Larson, who was probably the most talented driver the team has had. A partnership with JR Motorsports could help the team recover due to Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s numerous business connections. As for the driver, my guess is either Josh Berry or Noah Gragson. Justin Allgaier could be a good choice for the 1, but he appears content on being an Xfinity Series regular.

You're thinking of the Top-35 rule, where the top 35 drivers (or rather the cars they drove for the owner's points) in points were soft-locked into the show each week, but those around the bubble could fall out (or in) and it was a ever-changing list of those who had to qualify on speed (those outside 35th) or if they didn't have to worry too much about qualifying (but would still have to set a decent lap). That rule was only implemented in 2005 and was revoked after 2012. The first 5 or 6 races used the points from Homestead the previous season as the basis for the rule, after which the current season's standings kicked in.

Due to Mr. H's ownership stake within JRM... I thought they wouldn't move to Cup?
There is rumor that JrM wants to break into cup, but Jr has been adamant for years that he will not do that, and JrM is basically the NXS program for HMS, so it would definitely be an obstacle. Either way I would have a hard time seeing JrM teaming with CGR, but you never know.

https://www.espn.com.au/racing/nasc...buys-two-charters-move-nascar-cup-series-2022
Kaulig Racing has purchased two charters from Spire Motorsports and will move to NASCAR's Cup Series next year with a full-time ride for Justin Haley and select races for AJ Allmendinger.
- ESPN, 19th Jun 2021

#7 - Spire - Corey La Joie
#77 - Spire - Gone.

#16 - Kaulig - Justin Haley
#61? - Kaulig - A. J. Allmendinger
I think AJ should stay in Xfinity... I don't think he really wants to go cup racing. Kaulig wants him in Cup for his Road Racing expertise. :)

I too am wondering where charters are coming from for next year. 23XI and Trackhouse both want to expand, Kaulig is coming to Cup with 2 charters they bought from Spire, GMS is coming to Cup, possible expansion of RFR to 3 teams with Keselowski next year... Already we have the #37 running unchartered, so if they close (which seems likely) there is no charter movement there. Is Rick Ware about to make a boat load of money then?

I could see Spire continuing to run the #77 as an open team.

As for number choices... Kaulig second team #01?

No.
Where do they come from?

Known possible sources.

3 - Rick Ware Racing (maybe)
1 - Petty Ware Racing (maybe)
1 - Circle Sport (currently at Live Fast Motorsports)
1 - JTG Daugherty Racing (if it sells its one charter)

23XI... from Joe Gibbs Racing? Would that be an under the table slide? Would Hamlin negotiate with JGR directly?

NONE OF THOSE, ROLLO. REALITY WANTS TO PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE!

ow

Nope, Spire pulled rank on Trackhouse and sold it's charter out from underneath them, to Kaulig.

#7 - Spire - Corey La Joie
#77 - Spire - Gone.
#99 - Trackhouse - Gone

#16 - Kaulig - Justin Haley
#61? - Kaulig - A. J. Allmendinger

The other four things remain intact.
