Not a good shot at all and I think I can find a better one later.... Blue car is the #98 of Hideo Fukuyama which was owned by Jeff Davis who drove the #8 in the race.

#95 Gary Smith

I really dig the scheme on this car.

#16 Brendan Gaughn

#60 Lance Norick He was the top non-cup finisher in the race.

Burns front.jpg
#26 Ron Burns (I have a couple of images of his car thanks to him)

Also of note is the #8 of Jeff Davis directly behind Burns and to the inside of Davis is a clearer shot of Fukuyama's car. Directly behind Davis,
I THINK, may be Kelly Tanner. He was #44 pontiac and that definitely looks like a Kyle Petty #44 Pontiac. #10 Butch Gilliland behind him.

Burns rear.jpg
#26 Ron Burns rear shot. Also a nice shot of the rear of Brendan Gaughn's car. Other cars in the shot include #67 Scott Gaylord
Not sure why he has Oliver and Coke on the car here but not in the other photo previously posted. I am just guessing that this image
may have been from Qualifying and they pulled the Oliver decals off for the race at some point as that car shows damage.
Here you can also see the #3 of Dale Sr., #4 of Bobby Hamilton, #7 Michael Waltrip, #1 Dale Jr., and a small glimpse of the #94 Bill Elliott

I wonder why this race wasn’t as publicized or photographed as much as the 96, and 97 race?
I don't know. I remember lots of ads and such at the time but I think it's more to do with old websites that had more pictures disappearing from the web.

What’s your method for collecting photos like this?
lots and lots of searching. I use google and bing because sometimes one car might be on one search engine but not another. I also dig through several facebook groups. The next photo I post (Hornaday, and 2 japanese drivers came from the Winston West group). I don't hesitate to reach out to drivers and team owners. If the driver has passed but I can find their kid on facebook for example I reach out to them.
A big chunk of my collection is from years ago when the HSCR forum was active and from the now defunct RURA archive. Sometimes I just get lucky like when I found the Billy Ogle Jr Cup Car he DNQ'd for his only career Cup attempt in 1994. That was a lucky stumble upon on ebay of all places.
As for organizing that's something I wasn't good at early on. I would just lump them into folders by year and that was that. But now I also change the filename to the car number and driver name. It helps with tracking which version went with which driver when they had multiple drivers with slight variations in scheme.

That makes sense, I need to be more confident in asking former drivers and owners.

There was probably a time when a lot of people in NASCAR would scoff at the idea of gamers bugging them for pictures or information, but nowadays it is just another part of the sport. Many drivers now have at some point participated in online gaming to some degree, whether out of pure enjoyment or as part of PR for their career.

Also, I have heard a ton of stories of older retired drivers getting pretty excited about seeing someone recreate their old cars. I think it just makes them happy that younger generations still take an interest in the older stuff.

I always present myself to them as a photo collector. Because I am. I tell them that my goal is to track down at least one photo of every single car that attempted to qualify for a Cup race throughout the 90s or a given specific year. And I tell them I want to include their car in an archive online. I used to include a link to the HSCR forum but as that site is all but dead image links now I just don't do it anymore.
And you're right. They love talking racing. They love sharing backstories and such. There are some who dont or don't remember a particular car or scheme. I asked Andy Belmont once about a BGN car I only had a blurry screenshot of and he replied that it wasn't him and that he'd never drove that car. But he did clearly Since it was a shot from the race broadcast.
Others just don't respond.

Okay, so where I'm at on this, jeff Gordon, bobby Hamilton, mayfield, rusty, mikey, and DW (in the 88) all ran their basic primary schemes from the regular season. Mike Skinner ran the silver bottom Lowes Kobalt scheme with green pinstripes. I can find the diecast but haven't found a photo clear enough.

What is currently missing is
55 Kenny Wallace with the full decals
98 Hideo Fukuyama was a blue car with Ultra Shield sponsorship and numbers were a lighter/brighter blue.
28 Kazuteru Wakida the front shot when he blew his engine is all I have found
And the 44 of Kelly Tanner. It was a Kyle Petty car with no hood sponsor. Not sure about the side fenders. I have messaged both Kelly and his son in hopes of tracking one down.
I need to upload a couple of pictures but I have the rest of the field covered now
