I don't know. I remember lots of ads and such at the time but I think it's more to do with old websites that had more pictures disappearing from the web.I wonder why this race wasn’t as publicized or photographed as much as the 96, and 97 race?
What’s your method for collecting photos like this?I don't know. I remember lots of ads and such at the time but I think it's more to do with old websites that had more pictures disappearing from the web.
lots and lots of searching. I use google and bing because sometimes one car might be on one search engine but not another. I also dig through several facebook groups. The next photo I post (Hornaday, and 2 japanese drivers came from the Winston West group). I don't hesitate to reach out to drivers and team owners. If the driver has passed but I can find their kid on facebook for example I reach out to them. What’s your method for collecting photos like this?
That makes sense, I need to be more confident in asking former drivers and owners.lots and lots of searching. A big chunk of my collection is from years ago when the HSCR forum was active and from the now defunct RURA archive. Sometimes I just get lucky like when I found the Billy Ogle Jr Cup Car he DNQ'd for his only career Cup attempt in 1994. That was a lucky stumble upon on ebay of all places.
As for organizing that's something I wasn't good at early on. I would just lump them into folders by year and that was that. But now I also change the filename to the car number and driver name. It helps with tracking which version went with which driver when they had multiple drivers with slight variations in scheme.
I always present myself to them as a photo collector. Because I am. I tell them that my goal is to track down at least one photo of every single car that attempted to qualify for a Cup race throughout the 90s or a given specific year. And I tell them I want to include their car in an archive online. I used to include a link to the HSCR forum but as that site is all but dead image links now I just don't do it anymore. There was probably a time when a lot of people in NASCAR would scoff at the idea of gamers bugging them for pictures or information, but nowadays it is just another part of the sport. Many drivers now have at some point participated in online gaming to some degree, whether out of pure enjoyment or as part of PR for their career.
Also, I have heard a ton of stories of older retired drivers getting pretty excited about seeing someone recreate their old cars. I think it just makes them happy that younger generations still take an interest in the older stuff.
