"Daytona Birds"
#14 Richard Brickhouse (1970 Daytona 500) - Car 1 of 5

Overview:

I am excited to present the #14 Plymouth Superbird, which driver Richard Brickhouse drove for owner Bill Ellis in the 1970 Daytona 500!

Although he finished two laps down behind Daytona winner Pete Hamilton, Brickhouse finished 6th overall in the coveted race, and 2nd overall among the five Plymouth Superbird entries. I also believe he was the highest finisher among independents. This race would end up being the only event in the NASCAR Grand National Series 1970 season that Brickhouse would drive for Ellis, likely due to the lack of financial backing from the Chrysler Corporation.

So turn up the difficulty and give the Daytona International Speeedway another whirl while driving #14; it's okay if you don't win -- neither did Brickhouse. (But it'll be cool if you do!)

Each download contains a high resolution version.
Hi-Res: 2048x2048 car / 1024x1024 pit (2.8 MB)

In the readme file, I've included recommended track.ini edits for Daytona to replicate a more authentic, non-restrictor plate, vibe.

I hope you enjoy my work as much as I do!

Background:

BEEP BEEP!

There were five 1970 Plymouth Superbird entires in the 1970 Daytona 500:
- #7 Ramo Stott
- #14 Richard Brickhouse (Bill Ellis) - featured download
- #32 Dick Brooks
- #40 Pete Hamilton (Petty Enterprises)
- #43 Richard Petty (Petty Enterprises)

"Daytona Birds" is a *prospective* 5-car set by nolimitphil of these five historic vehicles. This page includes the individual download of Richard Brickhouse's paint scheme. Driver rating is generated by NRatings (SnyderArt v2.0 rating formula) for 2/22/1970 Daytona 500, with custom aerodynamic ratings suggested by rpm3d.net.

Regarding Accuracy:

Unfortunately there are very few images of this vehicle that I could find on the internet, virtually no closeups, and my time machine is currently out of service. Most of the color images of the car are from (what I suspect) the qualifier or practice, not the race itself. I am only missing one sticker that goes on the wing above the Good Year sticker, but I cannot figure out what it is (see below). If you can identify this decal or know where to source closeup photographs from this race, i.e. photo from the pits, etc., please let me know!

I also took a few liberties with this paint scheme:
- Rear taillight covers - these were either white or unpainted - but I do not know which.
- I do not know if the "1" is serif or sans serif on the rear; I assumed sans like the headlight numbers.
- I do not know if the numbers were displayed on one or both taillight covers. I assumed both.
- I do not know if the numbers on the back were red or black. I assumed red.
- I do not know which vents under the front nose were blocked off, so I copied the Petty Superbird setup.

I rarely copy + paste. 95% or more of what's included in my work are logos, numbers, etc. that I've completely reconstructed... in many cases make from scratch.
