Kurt Busch's career in the Southwest Tour started out with tragedy. Originally a backup driver for fellow up-and-comer Chris Trickle, Kurt was pegged to drive the car following Trickle's shooting and eventual death. In the 1998 season, he would find his way to victory lane once, in route to winning Rookie of the Year honors. The following year, he would better that, winning six times on his way to becoming champion that year.
