So I had this idea come to me tonight when looking at a picture of Dale Earnhardt's car.

I was thinking of an idea of a carset where the drivers of the past are starting their career's now instead.

The catch of this carset is that I don't want to simply create a replica of one of their schemes onto a current car because there's companies that no longer exist and companies that are still around have likely changed their logos since then. I want it to look as if the car was something you'd see if you went to a race today. So a Joe Nemechek car sponsored by Burger King would have the current BK logo, not the one from the 90's.

The thinking though is if you put these drivers in the sport today, would those that have a company that exists today still have that sponsor. So would Richard Petty still be sponsored by STP or would you put someone else on his car? Would you put Davey Allison with Havoline or maybe you choose a different sponsor instead. And those who had companies that no longer exist like Earnhardt with Goodwrench, who would you make his sponsor be today?

I think this would be something that can be done as a community carset if people want to help with it.

So I'll start the list with a few ideas I had in mind:

Sterling Marlin - #4 Llumar Window Films Camaro (because Llumar is owned by Eastman, which once was partially owner of Kodak)
Dale Earnhardt - #3 Bass Pro Shops Camaro
Richard Petty - #43 Goody's Headache Powder Camaro
Darrell Waltrip - #17 Advance Auto Parts Camaro (cause Western Auto became a part of Advance)
Davey Allison - #28 Hardee's Mustang (cause Hardee's was on the car the year before he came on)
Bill Elliott - #9 NAPA Mustang
Bill Elliott - #94 NAPA Mustang

This is an interesting take. I'd be interesting in giving the #17 a shot if we moved forward with this.

Perhaps Alan Kulwicki is sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings as it's apparent their sponsorship $ might be a bit more accessible in today's business climate. Sure Hooters sponsors Chase Elliott, but it's minimal, and only for a child's handful of races.

You guys can go ahead. The main things I had in mind on this though is that these would need to be able to be used for the MENCup19 mod when it comes out. Painting can be done on the Camaros and Camrys now but might need to be converted over later on if the templates have changed.

I think I’m going to do the Earnhardt Bass Pro Shops car for my first project.

And to anyone reading these, feel free to give suggestions for a driver/sponsor combination. It could be really be any driver, not just Hall of Fame or potential Hall of Fame drivers.

Going by what Cosmin has said, the paints for the 18 mod will transfer over to the 19 mod except for the fusion / mustang of course. He noted there may be slight adjustments needed.

I saw part of the video from where he streamed on Twitch over the weekend. It was not wanting to play (buffering a lot) to watch the whole thing. From what I seen there looks to be more on the templates for next year, as best I can tell though it looked like they added stuff to be able to customize the way the seats look. That alone I don't think is enough to say wait to paint.

He did mention and show with one of his schemes that the Camaro has a slight change around the fenders in the area where it meets the hood. If you have lines going through that area then they might have to be realigned on the new template. But from what I could tell it pretty much looked like the same template except for those things. Just as long as people are aware that changes might have to be made I don't see any reason not to paint on the current templates and then update later if needed.

Jemery Murray, great idea... I think all your choices are a great. If anyone else needs another idea for car Number and paint - I would like to see some of Kasey Kanes last year paint job's on the Camaro with the Hendricks #5 on it... Liftmaster, Farmers, Microsoft, Mt. Dew, UniFirst... to name a few.

I was thinking and there’s another way to look at this for the ideas.

Instead of thinking a driver and what sponsor they would have today, you could think from the sponsor viewpoint. If you take a certain sponsor you could think of what driver they would choose to have if they could take any driver from the past and bring them to the present while they are at their prime.

So like McDonald’s, for example, do you think they would pick Bill Elliott or if they wouldn’t then what driver would they go with instead. Or say Monster Energy was looking at driver from the past, so who would fit their brand.

That might help in a way to come up with a sponsor first and then think of a driver.

yep that makes since - I was also think in terms were some of us drive the #5 in racing leagues and have a hard time finding paint Camaro's with the #5 on them. There are a lot of great sponors with nice pain, Coke, Lowes, Tide, 3M, Napa, Nationwide, etc... AND for fitting a Brand, looks like Monster likes Kurt Bush, new driver of the #1.

I haven't had a chance to sit down and try to paint that Earnhardt scheme. But at the same time, this isn't going to be a project where we have a bunch of cars at once either.
