NASCAR has three 7x champions (The King, Dale, Jimmay) and you can argue about which one is the best until you are blue in the face (I think it's Jimmay).

FOURTH is a minefield.
Is it Jeff Gordon, Dave Pearson, Darrell Waltrip... is there some other quality devoid of results which makes someone else fit here?

I think you have named the top 3 for consideration for #4. It would be a very tough choice to decide which one is the most deserving. All of them great in their own right.

I would say Pearson he did the most with equipment he was given.

Maybe DW not only his driving ability and his record but also because of his personality and longevity in the sport. He was one hell of a PR guy.

David Pearson for sure. He only ran most of a full schedule for 5 seasons and still had 105 wins. Take 1973 for example, entered 18 races and won 11! DW and Jeff are legends but the Silver Fox is a notch above.
