I am not sure what you mean by garage renders unless you mean a 3d scene with a garage then yes, you can import any models. Also no Marmoset is not free but its a perpetual license so no subscription is required once you buy it once. It is a professional lightweight rendering program.

Nope, I don't pay. Got the educational license. And now I'm trying to learn Blender so maybe I can venture in off in some commercial stuff at some point.

Blender 2.8/2.9 is really great. I can't overstate for a program that will always be free just how good it is when compared to professional Maya and 3Ds max. Blender gets so many new tools/features that are actually useful and good that Autodesk doesn't even have in their 3d packages. And if by some chance the out of the box blender you download its not included there are tons of user created add-ons that are free or really cheap to enhance the program even more.

If people are just wanting to do NR2003 then yeah 3ds is fine especially since the older 3ds programs are what made NR2003 and you need those for mods. But if you are looking to do other 3d work and for commercial use Blender is really great. Its not this crap niche program it used to be known for in its pre 2.7 days. Professional studios now back the program so its gained a lot of traction since 2.8 came out and it became more industry standard with its toolset and interface navigation.

Yeah, it really has improved. I'm so impressed by the updates in the rendering department. I'm loving that Cycles renderer and the fact that I can render using my GPU since my CPU is a slow ass Pentium processor, lol. The plug-ins is got what made me download it. I wanted to import models from Google Maps to toy with. Ended up seeing the improvements and gave making a scene a shot and loved the results. I still like 3ds Max along with Corona better, but Blender sure has come a long way to finally put out something that's eye catching. It's tough to get used to after using 3ds Max for 15 years, but I'm getting there.

Do you have to put in like Credit Card Info or anything for 3ds's student licence?

I've started using blender. There aren't a lot of scenes that you can just jump into and make a cool render, but it still has render level quality images, and it is free to use. If you are struggling with getting a rendering program and especially if you are just barely learning how to do renders, I suggest blender

It's been a few years so I can't remember. I don't think I did. But one thing I do remember doing is researching schools offering a game design class or digital arts class and used the school name when it asked for it. They might have a list of approved schools in their database when you register for the student edition, I don't know, just guessing there. So trying to play it off as legit as you can might help.
