Hey everyone, sorry about the absence of cars here lately...
I work 7 hours a day every weekday until mid-August and then fly to London for a week, so the carset is still on hold until then, but I haven't forgotten about it! I have been watching more races from 2013 when I can to keep learning about the drivers and teams as well. Thank you for the support of this project, and I'll be back strong in September!

Fresh off of his first Cup Series championship at the end of 2012, Brad Keselowski looked to continue his rapid rise through NASCAR in 2013, which started with the Nationwide race on Saturday. Brad already saw both of trucks race the night before with Ross Chastain and Ryan Blaney driving, and they both came home in the top 15. In Brad's first start of the year, he contended all day, as was usual when he raced in the second series, and was leading off the final corner of the final lap when he threw a wild block on Regan Smith and was turned to the inside directly in front of Kyle Larson, who would go on to have his well-documented catchfence-breaking crash. Keselowski ultimately crossed the finish line in 12th amid all the wreckage.

Longtime NASCAR veteran Mike Bliss was beginning his 8th full time Nationwide Series season in 2013, and had been around NASCAR since the mid-90s, making him one of the most experienced drivers in the field. Bliss had been with TriStar Motorsports since 2011, and had scored 2 top 10s with them in 2 years, while finishing 12th and 8th in the championship respectively. Bliss took the controls of the 19 Toyota full-time from Tayler Malsam and carried his sponsor for the Daytona race, since G-Oil was partnering with the Daytona 500 that year. Mike ran midpack and stayed clear of wrecks until 5 laps to go, when he was involved in a multi-car accident in turn 3. Bliss retired and finished 23rd. Mike ended up with two top 10s in 2013, coming at Iowa and Dover, and finished 13th in the championship at the age of 48. Bliss ran his last NASCAR race in the rebranded Xfinity Series in 2016, and retired from the sport quietly at the age of 51.

Michael Annett began his second season in the Richard Petty Motorsports camp in 2013, and showed one of his strengths during the superspeedway race. Annett ran with the leaders for most of the day, getting to 2nd at one point, and was running around P20 with 5 laps to go when a wreck broke out in front of him. Annett had no where to go and was sent into the outside wall hard, a hit that would dislocate and fracture his sternum, which led to the Iowa native missing the next 8 races. Annett finished 26th at Daytona and Aric Almirola would run his car for the next race at Phoenix, with Reed Sorenson doing the rest of the time when Annett couldn't race. He came back at Charlotte and started his stomp up the points standings, including a 5th place finish at New Hampshire. Annett finished 15th in points despite missing 8 races, and would leave RPM for Tommy Baldwin Racing in the Cup Series for 2014. Annett wouldn't return to Nationwide action until he started his stint at JR Motorsports in 2017, where he stayed until his retirement last year.

Mike Wallace has raced in the NASCAR National Series since 1990, where he finished 6th in his first Busch Series start at Martinsville. Coming into 2013, the middle Wallace brother was starting his 4th season in a row driving Johnny Davis' #01 Chevrolet. Wallace was known to be a good drafter on the superspeedways, but was involved in a crash coming off of turn 4 with Kurt Busch around the two-thirds mark of the race, which left him in 34th. Wallace would come back strong to finish 7th at Talladega in the spring, but only had 4 top 20s all year and never ran a full-time season again in the series where he garnered 3 wins. Mike competed in all 3 NASCAR series and only missed finding victory lane in the Cup Series. Mike won 3 Busch Series races in 1994 and 4 Truck races from 1999-2000 as well as a victory in his final ever truck start at Talladega 2011. Wallace is now retired at 63 years old, but still hangs around many short tracks in the Midwest and Great Plains.

Regan Smith began his first of 3 full time seasons with JR Motorsports in 2013. Smith was originally developed in the DEI young driver program and famously had his first Cup Series win robbed in 2008 due to the double yellow line rule. The Nationwide Series season opener brought on a special sponsor for Smith and the rest of JR Motorsports--America's Power would run on the hood of the #7 Chevrolet. Smith has always been known in NASCAR as an excellent superspeedway racer and his prowess on the big tracks was on display again that Saturday afternoon, where coming off of Turn 4 on the final lap, he gave a hard push to Brad Keselowski and ended up turning him, causing the massive accident at the finish where Kyle Larson flipped into the catchfence. Overall, Smith had a good season, winning a couple races in the first half of the year at Talladega and Michigan before fading to finish 3rd in the standings. After 2015, he was signed to drive Tommy Baldwin's car in the Cup Series before bowing out of NASCAR full time. He hasn't made a start since 2019 and now is in a pit reporter role for FOX.

Dale Earnhardt Jr is a NASCAR icon for many reasons, only one of which being his long career as a driver. He founded his Xfinity Series team, JR Motorsports, in 2006. It has always been a very important Chevy team and is arguably the best team in the series right now. In 2013, Dale's team was fighting for wins consistently with Dale and the other 2 entries that the team would field full time. Earnhardt Jr won back-to-back Busch Series championships in 1998 and 1999 and has raced sporadically in the series since his full-time days to the point where he still is scheduled to make 2 starts during 2023. At the 2013 opener, Dale ran the TaxSlayer paint scheme that Regan Smith would end up running for much of the year, and had his best finish in 4 starts on the season, running 4th at the line. He would only run 4 races in 2013, gradually decreasing to where it is now. But even when Dale Earnhardt Jr isn't driving, he still impacts the sport and this series in so many ways.

The final JR Motorsports entry in this set is the #5 of Kasey Kahne in a very well known paint scheme with his sponsor Great Clips. In 2013, Great Clips sponsored almost every single race and covered a variety of drivers including Kahne, Brad Sweet, and a handful of others. Kahne usually drove a few Nationwide Series races each year, and this year was set to be his first with JR Motorsports. Having previously run with Braun Racing and Turner Motorsports, he was still looking for his first win in the series 2007, but despite contending at a few races, never got another win in the second NASCAR national touring series. In the Daytona opener, Kahne was involved in an accident early, and ended up logging laps in a heavily taped up car to eventually come home 20th.

Great to see that the project's still up and running. The schemes have been absolute bangers
Thanks, I've finally got most of the Toyotas and Fords done, and the Chevys have some pretty simple schemes and I finally got around to cranking them out

Most people think of "Crashgate", the infamous race-fixing scandal at the Singapore Grand Prix when they hear Nelson Piquet Jr's name, but the Brazilian has participated in almost every facet of auto racing in the world. In the early 2010s, his focus shifted to NASCAR. He first raced in the Nationwide and Truck Series in 2010, for Red Horse Racing, Billy Ballew Motorsports and Baker-Curb Racing. He impressed many with top 10s in the Truck Series at Daytona, Michigan, and Texas and he scored a 7th at Watkins Glen in his only Nationwide start that year. Kevin Harvick's team signed Piquet to drive for him in trucks in 2011, where Piquet did not really shock anyone with his performances. In 2012, he found a home with Turner Motorsports, ran full-time in trucks once again and ran better this time, finishing 7th in points. This prompted a full-time move to the Nationwide Series with the rebranded Turner-Scott Motorsports, and Piquet did well to avoid the wrecks at Daytona and come home 11th after only getting 17th in time trials. However, only 5 top 10s led to his release after 2013. Piquet went on to drive in the new Formula E championship, and he went and won the inaugural season with 2 wins, but could never find the same magic again after 2014. Piquet Jr still races in Brazil's top stock car series, Stock Car Brasil.

Justin Allgaier has been around NASCAR since 2008, when he made his first Nationwide Series start for Roger Penske. Even though he performed admirably, Justin was let go by Penske after 2010, and he venture to Turner Motorsports to run the full season in 2011. Allgaier had a career year, winning at Chicagoland and finishing 3rd in points. In 2012, he won what would end up being the series' last race at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, and ended up 6th in the final standings. As the team rebranded in 2013, Allgaier would stay in the 31 for the third straight season. At Daytona, Allgaier qualified 14th and raced among the lead pack all day. As trouble and chaos broke off Turn 4 in the last lap, Allgaier was sandwiched between the wall and Brad Keselowski, and they ended up flipping i=his young teammate Kyle Larson up and over. Allgaier wrecked across the line in the 7th position, and went sliding into the infield before Turn 1 along with two other cars. Justin would have a solid 2013 season, being in contention for most of the year before slipping to 5th at November's end. However, this proved enough to team co-owner Harry Scott to pick Justin Allgaier to go Cup racing with his team in 2014. HScott Motorsports struggled mightily both years, garnering only 1 top-10 in 71 races, with the best finish of 8th at the spring Bristol race in 2015. HScott released Justin and would shut down their Cup program after 2016. Allgaier was picked up by JR Motorsports in the Xfinity Series to run their #7 Camaro, where he is still with to this day. Despite winning multiple races almost every year, Allgaier still doesn't have a title in the series. We'll see if he can pick up where he left off heading into 2023 and beyond.

20 year old Kyle Larson was perhaps the most intriguing talent in NASCAR heading into 2013. The young phenom out of California made his name at short tracks around the West driving in USAC midgets, karts, and sprint cars where he earned the nickname "Yung Money". Larson was signed to Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing's development program in 2012, and after a few Truck starts in 2012, Larson was quickly moved to Turner Scott Motorsports full-time in 2013 with sponsorship from Proctor & Gamble's conglomerate of household brands. Larson landed the 21st starting spot and managed to stick around for the final restart on Lap 117, when out of Turn 4 on the final lap, a crash broke out in front of him. Larson ducked to the inside but was clipped by Brad Keselowski and pinned in front of two cars, flipping him up and into the catchfence before the finish line. Larson's car ended up hitting a connection in the catchfence, which broke and took his engine with it into the crowd. 28 spectators were injured in the wild accident, but no one was killed. Larson miraculously climbed out of half of his car under his own power and unscathed in his first Nationwide Series start. Kyle would end up 13th in the final order, but improved as the season went on. He impressed the most people at the spring Bristol race and the Homestead finale, leading laps at both but coming up just short. The Bristol race is remembered for the door-to-door battle between he and Kyle Busch to the line. Even without a win, Ganassi welcomed Larson to his Cup team in 2014, where Larson didn't win a race until 2016. After being picked up by Hendrick in 2021, Larson coasted to his first Cup championship, of which there are likely more in the future for the driver many tout as the best in the business.

Danica Patrick was the hottest topic in NASCAR coming into 2013, as she was set to make her first run full-time in the Cup Series. She started Speedweeks off with a bang, winning a historic pole for the Daytona 500. But before the race, she had one other duty that weekend, the Nationwide Series race. Danica would run Turner Scott Motorsports part-time 4th entry, the #34 Camaro. While not on the pole, she rolled off 12th and was one of the only subjects anyone talked about on TV during pre-race. Unfortunately, the engine let go on Lap 31 after she led 5 laps, and her 2013 debut was over quite quickly. The 500 faired much better, where she led 5 laps and finished 8th, her only Top 10 in Cup in 2013. Danica's time in NASCAR is laughed at a lot, but there was a time when many thought she would break out and become a great driver, something that she was inconsistent with in IndyCar beforehand.

Brian Scott was the first of 3 entries out of the Richard Childress Racing stable in the 2013 season opener. Scott was fresh off a move from Joe Gibbs Racing after 2012, and the Idaho native was looking to get on the right track with a new team and manufacturer. 2013 would be Scott's fourth consecutive full-time run in the series, and Scott started the weekend on back foot by only going 29th in time trials. However, with RCR's superspeedway package, Scott was up towards the front in no time, and steered clear of the trouble in the latter stages to come home 6th. Scott finished the race while being pinned between the wall and Justin Allgaier in what has become an iconic image, while Kyle Larson flipped over him and into the catchfence. Scott started out hot with 5 top 10s in a row, but fizzled out over the rest of spring. While he did nab a top 10 here and there and made his first Cup start at Charlotte in the fall, it was another middling year for Brian, finishing P7 in the final points standings whilst his teammate won the championship. Scott still lasted 2 more years at RCR in the 2 car, and after a notoriously bad year at Richard Petty Motorsports in 2016, he hung up the helmet for full-time racing.

Austin Dillon entered 2013 for his second full-time season driving for his grandfather, Richard Childress. After making waves in Trucks, winning the 2011 title, Dillon was one of the favorites headed into the year with the talent and the team behind him. At Daytona, the RCR equipment showed its strength as Austin went 5th quickest on Friday qualifying day. He contended and stayed around the top 20 or so, never challenging for the lead or even leading a lap. As the race drew closer to its end, intensity ramped up and an 11 car crash broke out on Lap 116 in Turn 3. Austin was involved, and the damage was terminal, leaving him 21st on the day. From there, things would only go up in 2013. Even though he never won a race, Austin scored 22 top 10s in 33 races and held off Sam Hornish Jr for the championship by a mere 3 points. Dillon stepped up to Cup full time in 2014, bringing back the #3 for the first time since Dale Earnhardt's death, and hasn't been incredibly but not incredibly bad either. The highlight of his career to this day is his 2018 Daytona 500 victory in the 60th running of the Great American Race.

Veteran Kurt Busch was coming out of the lowest point in his career as the calendar turned to 2013. While having moved on from them in the Cup Series. Kurt would run the 3 Nationwide superspeedway races driving Phoenix Racing's #1 Camaro. Kurt already had success with them the previous year, winning the Subway Firecracker 250 in July 2012. At the season opener, Busch would roll off to take the green in dead last before trying to work his way up the midfield. However, on Lap 65, Kurt was taken out by a spinning Mike Wallace, who turned himself on the run to the tri-oval. Kurt slid to a stop in the infield grass, done for the day in P35. This crash capped off a bad weekend in the Nationwide Series where he only ran 5 laps past halfway in the race. The 500 with Furniture Row Racing didn't go much better for him, finishing 5 laps down in 28th while the car he drove most of 2012 finished 7th with Regan Smith behind the wheel. Kurt did finally win the Daytona 500 in 2017 with Stewart-Haas Racing, and retired from full-time racing at the end of 2022 with one championship (2004) and one Daytona 500 as his biggest successes.
