Former SMU quarterback Robert Richardson Jr had been helping his dad run R3 Motorsports in NASCAR since 2005, and although he has only ever run one full-time season in any series (Trucks in 2006), Robert rolled into Daytona in 2013 for his 8th consecutive year competing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. He had been running the same 23 car since late in the 2008 season. Robert also would not attempt the Daytona 500 for the first time since 2009, after not qualifying in for last year's race and the new car in the Cup Series. Robert clocked in 30th in qualifying for the race on Saturday, and managed to avoid all the carnage by running at the back of the field. In the madness of the last 5 laps, Robert snuck into 9th at the start-finish line, his best finish in any national series and his only top 10 as well. Even though he did not attempt the next race at Phoenix, he returned at Las Vegas ran another 12 races after that in 2013. In 2014, he and his team scaled down their schedule even more, and it seemed like Richardson had hung up his helmet for good after 2014. But in 2016, BK Racing named Robert to drive their #26 and attempt to make the Daytona 500, which they miraculously did, and Robert finished 38th and said that he would use all his earnings from the race to put into his newborn son's college fund. This was the final time Robert would race in NASCAR, and he now lives in Texas with his wife and children.
