Well, I guess it should be fitting that I post one of the main reasons why I got into NR2003 as well as this whole forum with it's wonderful paint schemes in the first place. I'm currently doing a mock season with the Cup90 mod but with the main stipulations to this season is that it's an altered timeline where Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison don't have their fatal accidents and continue on through the years in the sport. Right now, things would be fairly simple but the ripple effect could be major as I have a few ideas swirling in my head.


I have everything on a Excel Spreadsheed but I can't upload. :coldsweat: I'll also start uploading clips to YouTube of the finishes as well as some briefings of the lead up to the end.

Daytona International Speedway

Daytona Beach, Florida

A brand new season had finally come with the new year and many were already on the edge of their seats with what was coming, starting off with the Super Bowl of Auto Racing, the 35th Annual Daytona 500. The exciting 6-way battle for the Winston Cup at the Hooters 500 at Atlanta still fresh on everyone's mind. None more so than defending champion Alan Kulwicki, The Underbird, who had manage beat the odds and despite being a 'underfunded' team, Alan was able to hold off Bill Elliott for one extra lap to seal the deal at Atlanta, and become the first owner/driver to win a championship in well over a decade since Petty's last championship in '79. Now the pressure would on him for sure, to prove that last year was no mere fluke.

And there was none two drivers more eager to prove that then the two men that Alan had beaten. The series most popular driver, Bill Elliott and son of NASCAR royalty and the sport's brightest new star in Davey Allison; both whom had every right to the championship and just came up just a few points short. The hunger was there with both of them.

A new rookie class was making quite the rounds this season as well. Kenny Wallace, younger brother of 1989 Champ Rusty Wallace, would be making his first full time season with SABCO's #40 ride. Bobby Labonte, younger brother of 1984 Champ Terry Labonte, would be driving Bill Davis Racing's new #22 ride for the Cup Series. And finally, there was Bill Davis' previous driver in the Busch Series with Jeff Gordon who would start his first full season with Rick Hendrick in the #24. Many were quickly expecting great things from the young driver who was the front runner of the rookie class.

The engines would be fired up after the opening ceremonies as 43 cars waited to duel for 500 grueling miles. Sitting on the front row would 5 time Champ Dale Earnhardt and Morgan Shepherd with the Wood Brothers #21. Pressure would be on Earnhardt once again, as three times he nearly had the Great American Race won in the closing laps but would come home empty.

The green flag would wave that warm February day and Earnhardt would lead the field. For the next 40 laps, drafting lanes would open and close as not many drivers could stay out in front without being overtaken. Loy Allen Jr. would be the first to retire as a Camshaft issue would force him to park.

Come the first round of pit stops, the field would slowly start to break away and part into several groups. Jeff Gordon would pull in as engine issues would trouble him; similar issues would occur to Derrike Cope, Jeff Purvis, Rick Wilson, Ted Musgrave and Bobby Labonte would all share similar concerns but would at least finish the race quite a number of laps down. Bobby Hillin Jr. and Davey Allison would have an incident in the pits as Hillin hit the brakes to avoid another car pulling out and caused Davey to rear end him, both giving them some damage and essentially dropping them out of competition.

Then, lap 56, one of the small packs that had been created, Lake Speed would get too loose after getting close to the bumper of Darrell Waltrip and would slide up turn 3... right into Ernie Irvan, taking both drivers out of the race.

Green flag would come once more and for almost 120 laps, it would stay that way. Teams would work different pit strategies and work with different groups as the field got more and more separated. For a time, Bill Elliott, Dave Marcis and Ken Schrader would fight for the lead. Come the second half of the race, Sterling Marlin and Mark Martin would duel each other and Marlin would come away leading the most laps while Mark would suffer heartbreak and have his engine go out with only two to go in the race.

Towards Lap 188, slower cars, mistakes in the pits and lack of stronger drafting partners would lead to a pack of four leaders: Marlin, Brett Bodine, Alan Kulwicki, and Schrader with 2 lapped cars in Dallenbach Jr. and Allison, would be keeping the lead when trouble would come.

Ken Squire: "Trouble at the line! Brett Bodine and Sterling Marlin are in the wall!"
Ned Jarrett: "Aw, no! No! That was two of our leaders right there!"
Squire: "Bodine seems to be driving alright away while Marlin spins around into the dirt and the caution will be out."
Jarrett: "Now I know Schrader and Kulwicki wished that didn't happen, now they'll get the rest of the field on their backs!"


Racing would resume with six to go as Kulwicki led the field but was put outside by Dale Jarrett and a misfire at the start caused much of the lead lap cars to fall back and have to spend the last few laps catching up. Lapped cars like Bobby Labonte, Rick Mast, Dallenbach Jr. and Allison would run interspersed with the leaders and cause some confusion as Geoff Bodine took the lead and had a lapped car shield around him coming into the final lap with Terry Labonte and Greg Sacks the only ones who could truly challenge.

Squire: "And we're coming to the line. Remember, the 16 and the 1 are not on the lead lap, focus on the 15, 14 and 68 cars! They come off of turn 4."
Jarrett: "Sacks has got a run down there! Geoff's trapped on the high side!"
Squire: "Does he have enough to upset Bodine?"
Jarrett: "I don't think Mast has enough speed down there for Sacks to edge out!"
Squire: "Coming to the checkers, Geoff Bodine is going to do it! He's your 1993 Daytona 500 champion!"

Victory Lane interview:
Squire: "We've got Chris Economaki down there in victory lane with our race winner as he now comes out of the car to celebrate.
Economaki: "Geoff, it takes a lot to win one just one Daytona 500, but now you're in grand company as someone who managed to get it twice. What was going through your head?
Geoff Bodine: "Well, it was mostly just stay in front. Ha! I thought those lapped cars could run some good interference, I don't know why they were fighting so hard, must have been some good cash in the purse this time. But I was trying to at least keep them between me and the 89 for just a bit longer but 16 got a good run."
Economaki: "Turn 4, what was the thought when you had the 1 beneath you and the 16 in front?"
Bodine: "We're wrecking. Either that or it was they were going to hold me up because my spotter was warning that the 68 was behind the 1 and that he was in 2nd. I was worried that Labonte would run us up and have us kiss the wall. I just held that wheel steady and then my spotter told me I just beat the 68!"
Economaki: "Geoff, there's one thing that's probably going to be asked, you were still a bit of a distance from the lead pack before that last caution. Were you aware that it was Brett getting into Marlin that brought it out?
Bodine: "No idea! Oh my word... my spotter just told me we had a wreck with the leaders at the line, I could see the 8 in the grass. I had no idea that he was caught up in that until I saw him pulling off during the caution. I thought he was having to fuel up on a blown strategy."
Economaki: "Certainly a race full of surprises, Ken, Ned, back to you in the booth."
