I decided to simulate the entire 1979 WC Season, excluding the Duels and the Clash. Rosters will be selected via real life rosters. If the car limit isn't reached in a certain race, DNQ'd cars will be used, mainly because I don't have all the cars.

This thread would be posted every 3 or 4 days, depending on time. I'll give the results and the top 10 in points, as well as a photo/video of the finish/anything else important.

Race 1: Winston Western 500 @ Riverside, California
40 Laps, Cloudy, Track made by Project Wildfire

The race started with Darrell Waltrip and road ringer Jim Thirkettle on the front row. Darrell led with a strong car and never looked back, leading all the laps even during green flag pit stops! Thirkettle trailed him the entire race not making progress whatsoever. However, his chances of winning increased when Al Holbert blew a header on Lap 30. Luckily for Darrell, he managed to get a strong start and beat Jim by 0.82 seconds. Joe Milliken was the Rookie of the race, finishing inside the Top 5.

    Top 10 (Race):
    1. # 88 Darrell Waltrip
    2. # 51 Jim Thirkettle
    3. # 11 Cale Yarborough
    4. # 74 Tim Williamson
    5. # 72 Joe Millikan (R)
    6. # 43 Richard Petty
    7. # 3 Richard Childress
    8. # 2 Dale Earnhardt (R)
    9. # 27 Benny Parsons
    10. # 1 Donnie Allison

    Top 10 (Points):

AND I was there....in '79 I mean, Waltrip led 87 out of 119 that day...Petty blew an engine early in the race. Dale Earnhardt got a rough lessen in road racing that day...the first few rows coming around Turn 6 where i sat that day was epic, the who's who of the era right up front. Fun race, lots of movers in the field going both ways up and down the field. A very young Terry Labonte had a rough go of it too...his first race of his first full season in the Winston Cup...

I'm guessing Darrell was a very good road course racer back in the day?

Darrell only has five road course wins in his career; all at Riverside. Won the '79 opener, swept the two races in 1980, won the summer race in 1981, and the summer race of 1986. All in all he had 9 poles, 10 top 5's, 22 top 10's, an average finish of 14.8, and an average start of 11.3.

Not bad for 53 career road course races in cup.

Waltrip always hung it out, didn't matter what kind of track... Remember road courses and short tracks have a lot in common...Namely how and when to brake...We know Darrell excelled at short tracks

Race 2: Daytona 500 @ Daytona Beach, Florida
    70 Laps, Cloudy

The biggest race of the year was set to begin. Bobby Allison nabbed the pole from Darrell Waltrip by 0.125 s.

The race began and by lap 3 the pack was already 3-by-3, with numerous drivers taking the lead. Unfortunately, it did not last long. On Lap 10, Dale Earnhardt and Benny Parsons went 4-wide with other cars and made contact, sending a bunch of cars into each other, involving Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, DK Ulrich, pole sitter Bobby Allison and others. Parsons retired from the race due to this.

Despite it being Lap 14, A few drivers came down to pit road, such as AJ Foyt, Richard Petty, and Ricky Rudd. The restart initiated and the top 3 were John Rezek, David Pearson, and Blackie Wangerin. Several very slow cars such as Buddy Arrington, a damaged Dale Earnhardt, and Tighe Scott, were constantly getting in the way of the pack, meaning a majority of the race was single- or double-file racing.

Those who did not pit on the caution came down in the final 10-20 laps, as for those did continued to dominate. It was until under 10 to go that most came down, but 3 did not: AJ Foyt, Richard Petty, and Ricky Rudd. They were stuck in a lap pack the remainder of the race. Before the white flag, AJ Foyt passed Richard Petty on the frontstretch, and he successfully won the race by about 2 tenths on second-place Ricky Rudd.

    Top 10 (Race):
    1. #51 AJ Foyt
    2. #90 Ricky Rudd
    3. #43 Richard Petty
    4. #3 Richard Childress
    5. #68 Chuck Bown
    6. #25 Ronnie Thomas
    7. #15 Bobby Allison
    8. #9 Bill Elliott
    9. #98 Ralph Jones
    10. #89 Jim Vandiver

    Race 3: Carolina 500 @ Rockingham
    118 Laps

Darrell Waltrip beat Bobby Allison to the pole, meaning that this race's front row is the opposite of Daytona's. In the opening laps, it was Dale Earnhardt who was the fastest having moved from 9th to 2nd in 11 laps. However, a flat tire on Lap 13 made him stop on pit road. He would exit the pits 1 lap down. But Dale was the fastest car on the track, and at one point he passed the car in 5th place Darrell dominated the first half of the race, with Richard Petty in a close second. Richard almost got by Waltrip in lap traffic, but could not complete the pass. Green flag pit stops occurred, and Dale Earnhardt was the leader. This only lasted for 2 laps, as he pitted, putting him back a lap down. Darrell had an even bigger lead and an even faster pace. He crossed the line first, with only 9 cars on the lead lap. He beat Petty by 4.92 s. Earnhardt, who spent most of the race in last, finished 18th.

    Top 10:
    1. #88 Darrell Waltrip
    2. #43 Richard Petty
    3. #11 Cale Yarborough
    4. #3 Richard Childress
    5. #15 Bobby Allison
    6. #90 Ricky Rudd
    7. #27 Benny Parsons
    8. #02 Dave Marcis
    9. #70 J.D. McDuffie
    10.#40 D.K. Ulrich (-1 Lap)

I didn't know there was a 1979 set for the hobby stock Mod, I use the Aero88 1979 Car Set, I'll look for it to see if the same driver line up or one mod has some different drivers?

Same cars/drivers as the Aero88 release. Only difference is the mod.

    Race 4: Richmond 400 @ Richmond Fairgrounds
    170 Laps

Richard Petty won the pole, beating Benny Parsons by 0.021s. The opening 50 Laps were single-file, due to the track's narrow groove. Darrell Waltrip had difficulty trying to go by Petty. On Lap 56, after leading all but 3 laps, Richard has a camshaft failure, making him finish 27th 114 Laps down. 15 Laps later Terry Labonte slams into the outside wall of pit road, causing the first caution. Everyone pitted. Bobby Allison led the pack at the restart. On Lap 87 Donnie Allison stalled on the backstretch due to a header problem. Then 10 Laps later there was a 4 car pileup involving Richard Childress, Dave Marcis, and JD McDuffie. The 4th caution was when Buddy Baker wrecked on Lap 119. This was a turning point in the race, as Darrell Waltrip DID NOT PIT. When we restarted, he simply fell back a rock. Bobby Allison had a great run and won over Earnhardt by 4.1s.

    Top 10:
    1. #15 Bobby Allison
    2. #2 Dale Earnhardt
    3. #72 Joe Millikan
    4. #48 James Hylton
    5. #54 Lennie Pond
    6. #11 Cale Yarborough
    7. #90 Ricky Rudd
    8. #40 DK Ulrich
    9. #67 Buddy Arrington
    10. #37 Dave Watson
