Figured it out guys. In the Customize>Preferences>Viewports in the display driver section it defaults as "Nitrous 3D 11 (Recommended)" and should be changed to "Nitrous Software".
Well that's not comforting. I've tried every file from bullring and that's what it shows. It's 3ds Max 2016 - Student Version. When I render it's fine, but in the viewport everything shows like those pictures above and I've seen in tutorial that the .bmp is just dragged over on the model. Also...
Rendering is now done when I go through the F9/Render and it opens to show the full car with whatever scheme is added. I'm just wondering how in some videos I've seen when a person opens 3ds Max the car model shows as a plain car with no rendering done. Is it like that for everyone?
