I am trying to make a template for the Cup2000 mod (A Toyota Camry to be exact)

What tips and techniques do you use?

Fyi: Just so you know Template creations, start from the beginning, from the actual modeler creating the template.. Now for creating addon layers to which I think you want. :) First thing I would tell anyone, go on you tube, and start watching some video's. Make it your friend. Watch video, pause it, try the technique, yourself, then repeat, repeat and repeat again. That's how you get better..

OK, sorry for resurrecting an old thread but my question fits right in here.
I have a template I've been sitting on for a couple of years relatively untouched because I got frustrated. Now, I did make 1 of the 2 96/97 thunderbird temps for the cup 90 mod a few years ago so i do have a small bit of experience.
Anyways, I was working on making a Pontiac Sunfire temp based on the old Goody's dash series and it seemed to be going well until I realized the shading layer for the headlights and nose wasn't going to show up properly on any paint that was a dark color. Some of the older templates had the highlight and shading layers merged together and it maintained transparency.
My question is: How do I get the shading layers to maintain that regardless of the paint color?
I have attached an image of my nose section for reference

Unfortunately you just don.t see that much shading on darker car, (black dark blues etc.) i would try enhancing a highlight layer more. When i done templates i imagined myself as the sun shining straight down on a vehicle and adjusting highlighted areas where i think sunlight would hit it. I mean when i look at my truck which is black, i don't see a lot of shading, i see highlighted ares where the sun is hitting it.

How do you guys put together your shading layers? Does taking a good image of an all white car and overlaying on the temp and then making it transparent work? Or is there some specific trick I am missing?
For highlight layers, is it basically a shading layer that has been inverted like I did on the front edge in the above pic?

Images help, but just for visuals. The wire frame is essential when shading. when do a shading layer use ONLY black, and make individual layers for different parts of the car, the you can adjust the color/shading depth on each layer to your liking. after all your shading is done, all the same aforementioned steps are done ONLY using white for a highlight layer. FYI you can use the Gaussian blur tool for lot of fading. Hope I'm helping in some kind of way, doing a template is enjoyable (but painstaking). If you look under the DMRNXS16 MOD I have 246 layers in that chassis! but to this day every bit of it was fun.
