(This is inspired by sgfulton83's personal mock season because I really like what he's doing with it so I wanted to try something similar to it but obviously with me and my own career!)

The year is 2003 and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is gearing up for its 9th season of racing action as NASCAR's 3rd tier racing series. Twenty-five events are set to be held and it's sure to be another thrilling battle all the way to the end. Last seasons champion Mike Bliss of Xpress Motorsports has moved on and Travis Kvapil is set to drive the Xpress #16 for the nearing season. Many are wondering if he will be able to pilot that truck to the same success it saw last year, but another story catching the attention of many around the industry is the recently announced team out of Chesterfield, Virginia; Gibson Motorsports. Team owner Steven Gibson Jr. made a statement in the local paper about it, and here's what he had to say: So Steven, tell us about it! "Aw man, It's really a dream come true! This is what it's all about for me! Sure winning all these races around here in the late model is cool and all, but I'm gonna be the owner and driver of a truck in the Craftsman Truck Series! That's crazy. I'm pumped. Obviously as we announced to the public, me and my guys built a six race schedule that we are very happy with and can't wait to run. We are only running six races this year because that's all the funding we have for now but we are hoping we can ruffle some feathers and find a few sponsors for the truck. We tried keeping the races closer to Virginia or atleast on the east coast to keep travel costs down. If you haven't seen it yet, you can watch me run in Martinsville (4/12), Memphis (6/21), Nashville (8/8), Bristol (8/20), Richmond (9/4), and Homestead (11/14)." Which one are you most looking forward to? "That's a pretty tricky question. All of them! No, but uh, seriously I am pumped for them all. I think if I had to narrow it down to a single favorite it would have to be either Bristol or Martinsville. Bristol because well, y'know, who wouldn't love to win at Bristol? Martinsville... Martinsville on the other hand I just can't wait to run. So much success there in the late model, I've never been able to win but I've had some very good runs there in the past and if I could run well there in the truck it would just be so awesome!" Thank you Steven, good luck this year! Many wonder if he will be able to carry local success all the way into the big leagues, many wonder how he will run without much funding, soon these thoughts will no longer be wonders, but reality as we will see it all unfold.

(For all races I don't run, I will use real life results for those races)

The trucks are pulling out onto the paperclip for the first time this weekend on a cloudy Virginia morning as they are set to take on their first twenty minute practice session.

Mesa Marin winner Dennis Setzer has carried the momentum over into first practice as he tops the charts with a 21.630, Daytona winner Rick Crawford close behind with a 21.631, young Brendan Gaughn in third with a 21.668, and local legend turned national series rookie Steven Gibson Jr. finishes the session in twenty-seventh with a 21.860. Ray Dunlap caught up with Steven at the end of the session: So.. how was it out there? "It was awesome! The truck felt great. It's a little tight up off the corner at times but it felt fast man. Me and the guys decided to pull it in a little bit early there to minimize wear and tear on our parts so there was a plenty speed left out there but with the little funds we have to work with we have to take as many short cuts as we can but I think we have the right data we need to build off of and hopefully we can take it to them in qualifying." There you have it, Craftsman Truck Series rookie Steven Gibson Jr. is happy with the truck and confident there is more to be gotten out there, back up to you Rick!

Steven, you just won in your first ever start? How does it feel? "It feels incredible. I don't even know what to say. When I said I knew the truck had speed I didn't know this is what it had, this thing was a rocket. Great long run pace, it felt really good on old tires and its just so crazy, I don't even know what to say!" Against the likes of Bobby Hamilton, Rick Crawford, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Dennis Seltzer, Ted Musgrave, and the many others I can't name because of time restrictions, what do you think of beating them in your first go? "It's just crazy. First of all, what a race. I hope the fans enjoyed. It was a crazy welcome to the series. It felt like it was getting to be a race of attrition at around the halfway point when we couldn't make it down to turn one, I even had a scare down there in turn one when they checked up a little faster than I would've liked, but man. I've got to give props to all these guys, they raced great, it was so much fun and I can't for Memphis. I just won Martinsville Ray, holy crap!" That's one excited rookie right there, Rick!

The truckers are back for the 8th race of the season right here at Memphis Motorsports Park including the rookie Steven Gibson Jr. who won in his first start back at Martinsville, can he keep the ball rolling this weekend? It's time to find out!

memphispractice1.png

After struggling at Texas, Ted Musgrave sits fastest in first practice followed up by previous race winner Brendan Gaughan followed by a shocking third place Bobby Dotter who has sat out since Martinsville.

Steven Gibson Jr. on the other hand had a quite eventful first practice where he had three separate spins on his way to twenty-second on the board at the end of the session, ESPN's Phil Parsons caught up with him after:

memphisinterview1.png

*I ran this race last weekend and am just now getting around to doing presentation and forgot that the three spins happened in happy hour so just pretend I didn't mention it in the post practice interview I guess, lol.

Craftsman Truck Series rookie Steven Gibson Jr. qualifies thirty-first for the O'Reilly 400K at Memphis Motorsports Park. "Yeah, I mean the same thing happened at Martinsville. Qualified deep in the field and we just worked our way forwards in the race so that's what we'll try to do again. I just can't figure out why we're so off in these practice and qualifying sessions but then turn around and be so quick in the race, it's just crazy. I think we can be as fast as those other guys but It'll take some work in happy hour." he says after.

Federated Auto Parts 200 at Nashville | Practice 1
The Craftsman Truck Series returns for the 15th race of the season here at Nashville Superspeedway. The trucks are pulling out onto the track now and we are ready to go green in practice!

1632643940749.png

Chad Chaffin is the only driver to break into the 30s so far followed by Dennis Setzer and Terry Cook.

Two time rookie winner Steven Gibson Jr. had a crash in practice that would see his team rush to get the truck repaired for qualifying.

Here's what he had to say afterwards when Ray Dunlap caught up with him:

Craftsman Truck Series rookie Steven Gibson Jr. qualifies thirty-sixth in the Federated Auto Parts 200 at Nashville Superspeedway. "We may be in trouble here, the truck just feels like it's lacking speed. It didn't feel too good in practice but it got the job done until I wrecked it obviously but now it definitely feels off. We went the wrong way on the qualifying setup anyways and it was just wicked loose. It's a wonder how I didn't wreck it again, it was dead sideways getting down into three there on my fast lap. I was hanging on." he said after.

"Evidently the common theme here is that we're gonna show up and suck in practice, suck in qualifying, spin a few times in happy hour despite eventually setting my best time of the weekend, and then go on to drive through the field in the race. Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself but hey, the truck didn't feel too terrible there in happy hour besides the spin, so we'll just have to wait and see what it's got!"

Craftsman Truck Series rookie Steven Gibson Jr. qualifies thirty-first in O'Reilly 200 Presented by Valvoline MaxLife at Bristol Motor Speedway. "The truck feels awful. I don't know if it tight or loose because it changes every lap. It pushes through the center and jumps around on the exit and I'm just really struggling to get it pinned down on the bottom so I think that's where we're losing some speed. The truck is still badly hurt from Nashville as you can see, but I think if we can just push through this race we'll get it fixed up fully for Richmond." he said after.

"This is the worse the truck has felt for sure, me and my guys worked so hard after qualifying but we still can't find anything. On the bright side I've not been involved in any incidents so far this weekend, let's see if I can carry it over into the race. Hopefully we can keep it clean and salvage a half decent finish."

Steven Gibson Jr. spoke to media after the race: "That was just an unfortunate set of circumstances out there today, I lost my radio shortly after that incident with Ken (Schrader) and had no idea I had a penalty. My spotter was off and on but I never heard that I had gotten a penalty. It sucks because I thought we had a chance at a good finish until the 75 got to us. I swear man, I just can't get through one of these clean, I keep getting hit. I'm just gonna start standing my ground from here on out and see how it goes.

Thank you! Jayski is awesome, great to look at when making paint schemes with all the photos on there. It's also been cool looking through the old news archives recently now that I've started this. It's fun to see all the behind the scenes stuff like testing and team movement and everything else. Also, I'm glad you enjoy reading these, they are really fun to put together. I'm excited for what's to come!

1633484927323.png

The Craftsman Truck Series drivers hit the track early this week for a glimpse at the newly reconfigured Homestead-Miami Speedway which saw a repave and total overhaul of the turns. From 6 degrees of banking to a variable 18-20 degrees, it certainly showed a difference when we saw the average speed of 164.24mph, smashing the old Winston Cup record of 156.44mph. Jason Leffler topped the session, but we still think the truckers have much more to offer come race time.

The Craftsman Truck Series hit the newly resurfaced Homestead-Miami Speedway for the first time in competition today in Practice 1, Kevin Harvick set the fastest time with a 32.760 followed by Terry Cook and Jon Wood. T.J. Bell and Brendan Gaughan round out the top 5. Steven Gibson Jr. took a ride late in the session when he practiced a green flag pit stop, he took a slide down pit road but thankfully kept it out of the wall on the way to a twenty-third spot on the board.

Craftsman Truck Series rookie Steven Gibson Jr. qualifies thirty-third in the Ford 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. "We're gonna have to take a look at the underside of this truck, I think we may have scraped a few inches off the bottom of it after that run. I've never bottomed out so hard at a track. I'm not sure where we went wrong with the setup, but it's a very disappointing. I know we have speed but now we'll have to come from the rear. Hopefully nothing is too messed up and we can reverse the changes we made in qualifying."

Ford 200 at Homestead | Happy Hour
1633564258606.png

It was a disastrous Happy Hour for Steven Gibson Jr. despite his eighth fastest time. Late in the session he suffered another incident, leaving him with a pretty hurt race truck. Here's what he said afterwards: "I just cannot believe the luck we're having. It's every week. I was finishing up a long run there at the end and the truck felt great. I was getting a big draft from the #28 truck down the front stretch and he waved me low. We got down past the finish line and getting into (turn) 1 he just checked up out of nowhere right in the middle of the groove and I had to jerk the wheel to avoid him. I still made right front contact with his left rear, and it spun me out. I hit the wall with the tail of the truck and then got the side tore off by him. This is gonna put us in a big hole. Thankfully we have a bit of extra help with us this weekend and we should be able to get it mostly fixed up, but it's just ridiculous. We shouldn't be in this position every week. Me and my group work too hard on this truck week in and week out to keep tearing it up, so I've got to do better. I'll do my best to bring home the trophy when it's all said and done."
